with all the talk of the taiwanese bred kels floating around, today finally found some. lil guys, with large gold specs. 85 bucks usd retail level. cheaper than i had imagined so i stand corrected. These came from a more recent batch. reportedly, the first batch was in feb of this year, and are about 3 inches or so now, showing some body spots, but no anal or pelvic speckling.

This is about what I would pay for these F1 Bahia. So I guess I wasn't far off on the price. I'm sure when more of these guys come in the wild caught market will drop dramatically which kinda sucks for those of us that already put all this money into wild kelbs. Well other than the lucky few that picked up the $35 ones that came in.

Li is actually in Japan visting the breeder as we speak. he says the breeder has "thousands" of babies ready to go. whoever this guy is just hit a goldmine. i told Li to bring some back and make a killing of you guys

Yeah Li probably saw that magazine in Taiwan which was probably printed in Taiwan for Japanese readers.

There's another successful kel pair breeding in Taiwan, few months back. Not sure what kind of kels though. From what I hear, these are much less spectacular but still young so hard to really know. estimate these can be had at 60-80USD 2-3" fish, at the wholesale level. Have yet to see one. Heard the 2 batches were exclusively sold to macau and china.

300USD for japan bred fish sounds reasonable (high cost of everything there). I'd even go as far as saying a good deal, assuming the fish are at a stable size, and especially so with parents like that. Doubt they'd go for less cos the domestic and regional markets would pay much more I'm sure. 1000 isn't that many compared to the demand.

with successful kel captive breeding on the rise, wouldn't be suprised if prices corrected significantly across the board (wild/captive bred) in the next 1-2 years, provided they look nice full grown.

In fact there was really only ONE true kelberi breeder in Taiwan. I am very sure the breeder was asked not to disclose information about numbers of fish and price by the wholesaler for business reason and market value of the fish. Due to high demand of the true kelberi, a lot of vendors spread rumor about thousands babies available so that they can claim to possess the true F1 golden kelberi as well. I believe there was only one distributor of babies from this exact breeder. This is when a reputable seller comes into place.

2"-3" kel looks like a mono, how can you tell the difference to avoid being scam?

No you can't and many of us probably were victims of scam in the past.

that's where the reputable dealer and knowing where the fish came from come into play.

not the word on the street, here. LFS will get some soon so I'll take some photos. The japan ones will cost big money. There's talk the taiwan ones will sell for 150usd or so 2-3" fish.

Last time I check proven F1 golden kelberi was still go for $260 USD/ea over there at LFS. And no bargain.
The $150/ea kelberi in Taiwan are probably from this different breeder. The owner refused to show picture of his female breeder instead and unfortunate he used someone else's picture

opps... i never clicked to enlarge the magazine photo, it's in chinese script (same used in taiwan), not japanese.
probably 1 in 100 chance the ones in bags are kels. earlier in the weak same vendor was selling 2 for same price.

nice research madness....it looks like you have some amazing shops and kels every where. thanks for the info.

my pleasure. part of the fun. 95% the shops, like 20-30 of them, small, are centralized over 2 blocks. they all get from similar sources, some break/share shipments. so part of determining what's accurate is visiting all of them and cross referencing info. profit margins at retail are anywhere from 2-3x's so cost is pretty easy to estimate, fish sourced regionally that were orig imported pass through several middle men so prices here for wild fish are higher.
