I AGREE!
To many people buy reptiles and fish and do no research.
I feel bad every time i see someone buy a pacu for this reason.
Or an albino burm cuz its pretty.
I think permits would be a good idea...but banning...No.

Another idea is a high tax on some reptiles instead of banning them . An inexpensive python might be released and certainly purchased by a kid or someone who buys on impulse.

A $500 python isnt bought by either .

That wouldnt happen, although a great idea just unlikely. I wish it would though that way importers wouldnt bring in 5000 plus reticulated pythons every year.

I sort of agree i just dont like the idea of increasing tax like they did on alcohol cos that didnt work it just makes it more dificult for those of us that want to and know how to but just cant afford such an increased price tag!

Maybe it would be a lot better if the shops selling them made sure they were going to a knowledgable good home. Just by quizing people a bit before while chatting to them.

Though I dont drink lol . Well ,my wife does lol I know what your saying I figured it would be better than banning them.

People have a tendency to impulse buy if cheap . Its like those quarter size turtles . My brother in law bought 4 or 5 for $20 not long ago here by the beach.

They will in time be released in lake by his house which is loaded with turtles ALL impulsed bought now if they were $50 each they would not have been bought .

He is not a good pet owner just an impulse buyer .

I agree but money is money and some dealers are never going to do that . If they can sell 100 baby pythons to 100 -16 yr old kids than great .

I think by requiring permits and not banning this problem will be solved completely. By permitting, I think both the shops and the owners should have documented proof that an animal was sold to a permit holder. These permits will definatley weed out the impulse buyers. As these permits will require classroom time, exams, and routine checkups like they do for hots and crocodilians. Each petshop will have a list of inventory of permit required pets sold and they would need to submit those at the end of each fiscal year, as well as a list of animals purchased from the wholeseller. If the numbers arent matching and animals were indeed sold to non permit pet owners then the shop would risk getting a fine.

It sounds like policing, but its the best way to ensure that reptiles are not out right banned from importation.

Yes that if done correctly would work. The media ESP here loves to scare people with giant snake/lizard stories which leeds to some wanting them banned.

Though I keep 6 snakes (3 ruthven-3 arizona mts) and all stay under 4 feet and harmless. I would never even let my neighbors know I have snakes.

Rather not risk it . They dont even know I have fish and feel better safe than sorry
