BARRACUDA OWNERS ACESTRORHYNCHUS

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Acclamation--- put in a 15g for 2 weeks and then transferred to a 75g.

Water parameters--- pH= 7-7.5 because of my tap water hardness

Medications-- never used any yet. hopefully will never have to

Tank Info-- 75g with 2 pieces of driftwood standing upright, and 1 generic broadleaf plant.

Foods-- right now they are all between 4 3/4" and 5" and are fed 1.5" minnows every two days

Problems-- They jump out of the tank and scare the **** out of you. Can over eat if too many small minnows are put in at once.

Tank mates--- right now i have 2 crayfish, 3 ghost shrimp, 3 balas, 2 rainbows. They all seem to get along fine with the Ace, but i had some Jack Dempseys before and they bullied the hell out of the ace until he got mad and shredded 2 JD's!

Advice for new owners--- try to put them in an empty tank to help them relax.

It says you have 2 red tails, they look more like yellow tails no, I could be wrong?

How long have you had them, and how did you go about acclimation did you float the bag for 15, then add water ect. or did you use a bucket and drip or anything? Thanks.

Nice looking fish thanks for the information. They look good, & good luck!!!

Nice cuda abid222

I have learned my lesson about the jumping out as well. I lost 5 last year alone. They kept finding a new way out.

I beleive what you have there are
Aceestrorhynchus microlepis or
Acestrorhynchus Falcirostris

Common name is yellow tail

Nice etheir way and many say that they are the same species but where mixed up years ago when profiling. 2 different explorers found them at about the same time and gave them different names. Which is pretty common.

By chance have you had them since they were very young/small?

I ask because Fals and Micro's have red and yellow tails when young and also have 2 black stripes going from head to tail.

I've had 3 Red Tails and the longest lived only made it to about 10 months. I had a problem with the early ones because I had some rocks on the bottom that were very rough and when he shot at prey he would crash into the rocks and get nasty gashes. Those wounds would end up getting some type of fungus and within 2 days he was gone. That happened to the first two then I got smart and removed all the rocks from the tank.;)

The third one I got grew from 2.5" to about 6" in 8 months. It was fed rosys and small goldfish that were gut loaded and quarantined before they became food. Initially he had an anchor worm hanging off one side. I netted him, pulled the worm tail out and he seemed none the wiser.

After 8 months he was doing great and getting fat when 3 days ago I found a big chunk taken out of his side that looked like a bite. Before I had a chance to quarantine him to a med tank he developed fungus or infection and became a floater. I think one of the tank mates had something to do with it. I have two other Payara Scomberoide and the bigger one is about the same size.

I think the next time I get a Red Tail it's going to be species only tank with no other tank mates.

I've had them since they were about 3"

So basically the pet store had no idea what they had? Well are yellows and reds basically the same in terms of temperment and activity?

Thanks to everybody else who like my cudas

Lets get a good care sheet, and information page for freshwater barracuda.

Example we can cover the types, tankmates, tank size Water conditions, eating habits and how to break live for a healthy diet, I perfer feeding live best:D.

You guys start throwing information at this link and I will be happy to take the time to put it all down and make a nice complete page in the end when its all said and done.

The thing I really want is information and imput from people who have had experience keeping, I would love to see tips on acclimating and meds to treat. If nothing good by tomorrow after work I will get it going, (but its getting late and im tired:irked:) I know a few good websites to get the basics.

Lets make another thread like the payara care sheet, which I happen to have 3 of and got loads of great information from. These are awesome fish and I want to knowl ALL there is to know about them

LETS MAKE THIS HAPPEN :headbang2

awesome Altus

Do you have any pics of yours?

This is one of the few that I have not owned before. I bought some red tailed juvies that were labeled altus but turned out to be Falcatus.
