Beani Gold Rush

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
then I shall introduce the HBH for when they are ready since they are 2.5mm sinking...

Duanes, style's beani posted here in this thread experienced bloat once it passed 4" as I also hear that this is their vulnerable spot to bloat...did you experience any issues past that size, or did your lower temps and aggression maintenance prevent this issue?
I have been feeding the extra garlic because of this issue and once in a while epsom soak their pellets

I snapped more pics of my female...

Notice the little bit of blue and red in the upper dorsal? I hope that stays

Never had bloat with mine. I figure it's because
I do daily, or every other day 20%-40% water changes, low protein/high spirulina (high fiber diet), high current, and low temps.

I did have an adult pair 3 years ago that died of ducklips during a summer heat wave, that, and reading an article by Dan Woodland in Cichlid News Mag prompted my cooler temp regime.
When my 2nd pair spawned, the temp was only 68'F.

thanks for the additional info Duanes

Check out these new pics of my male and female that are starting to bond styles :D

1st pic is the female which is becoming really dark gold lately with black bars and dorsal fins

2nd is the male which has the straight gold pattern

Haha I like that last pic of them flaring out. He's got some nice flash going on his face there.

Gonna be some nice fish

I wish my beani didn't kill my umbees. I'm really wanting to start up another tank for an umbee pair. Or red terrors.... I've never had luck with terrors though for some reason, and their near impossible to find up here anymore

Looking good. The funny thing about these cichlids (and the haitiensus for that matter) is they are the only cichlids endemic in their area and habitat. Either they were simply the only cichlid in the area, or they found evolutionary success by ridding the area of any and all cichlid competition (my guess is the later). This seems to be why they can kill any other cichlid put in a tank with them, or die trying.

I find this with many North American cichlids, they just don't play well with others of another species.
