And what exactly does this do? I know it cures the ray and makes it eat again but what exactly are you curing?

I've kept rays for a while now and I've never heard of such a thing. Hyposalinity yes- but the exact opposite?

Don't get me wrong if it works I have no problem letting my ray take a dip with the Morays, but this is a pretty big gamble to do in my case as it's a one of a kind ray.

Would just like a little more of a scientific explanation explaining why this works.

i have read on some cichlid sites that the salt can work as a laxative. could just hlep to "flush" the digestive system?

That's Epsom Salt -- the one that works as a laxative.

I would also like to hear the explanation on this. I don't have rays, but I'm always interested in hearing folks' theories on the use of salt.

im sure the salt bath would have its benifits. just like washing out your mouth w salt water to help wounds clean and heal... the question is how muchis safe? and why not just add it to your tank instead like we've been doing??

interesting cure...

When i recieved these rays they water in the bags was amonia.i tested the water and i dont know how they survived it was off the charts. The rays i gave a salt bath to probably had amonia burns internal. The salt healed them maybe.they could have been on the verge of healing on their own but this didnt bother them at all.I did it to two very expensive rays.My money was going to be refunded if they died , so i tried this insane method out and it works.

good read, thanks for the info. can you give a little more detail on the size of the fish you tried with and was it right after you received the fish or a few days later after some acclimating already.

as for scientific explaination. salt creates a hostile environment for many smaller organisms, its also baterialstatic/cidal depending on the duration. rays are really secondary freshwater fish, I wouldn't be surprised to hear that they can tolerate salt baths. its the same as freshwater dips for salt water fish just the opposite. I have to find some newly imported cheap rays to try this on for a science project!

one ray was 6" henlei and the other was 10"hybrid.the 6" it was about a week after shipping the other 2 weeks after shipping. Both rays are the best of the group that i imported in.they are the only two that will eat hikari massivore pellets.

and they both have grown about 2 inches in disc and girth.they are very good eaters now.compared to the others that didnt get a salt bath the two that did are way fatter was nicer colors.I am going to try it with a healthy ray and see what happens
