i think its when the salt leaves the rays system something occurs. In the wild fish go into saltwater to clean parasites off them also the same goes with saltwater fish they will swim into freshwater to clean off too.salt water wont kill your freshwater fish maybe if you leave them in for a long time but 5-15 minutes wont hurt

Im pretty sure they don't, freshwater stay in freshwater, saltwater stay in saltwater, except for some exceptions due to migration purposes which have nothing to do about cleaning themselves off or cleaning themselves of parasites. Water softner salt is COMPLETELY different from the salt in saltwater. Just to clear that up. You CANNOT keep saltwater fish in freshwater treated with water softner salt.

but aquarium salt for freshwater is also different from the seasalt that you use in saltwater tanks right? and do you think this would work on retic pups that are not really eating good? i dont have any salt added to my aquarium but if they dont get better i might have to try it out on at least one of them. wouldnt be a big loss money wise but ray wise.... well i dont want to kill one.

If we are simply creating an enviroment that kills unwanted organisms why would it matter which salt you use? Isn't high salinity the goal regardless of which salt is used to get the high salinity? Most of us keep rays in tap water that's similar in PH to saltwater anyways...

i am getting no where with this.their are thousands of fish in the world that go into fresh and salt water.

anyways the ray is good today his colors are strong again and he eats good.we will see if he starts gaining weight.he ate shrimp which he would not accept yesterday.progress on the third ray i have done this too.I am convinced that salt bath helps rays alot

Usually when something works there's a reason for it. Just wondering what the reason is..... The thread might go somewhere if this reason is mentioned. If the reason is valid maybe others will try and it will become an accepted form of treatment. I'm just not gonna up and try it till I hear a convincing arguement from a scientific point of view. Not "Hey I did this and it worked." Usually the first thing asked when someone stumbles on a miracle cure like this is "Why?"

I'm not buying that rays in the middle of the Amazon just up and decide they are going to swim to the ocean to kill some bad organisms in salt water. Like mentioned earlier changes in salinity in a fishes habbitat usually only happen during breeding.

Well, just to report some results. I have officially killed a ray using his salt method. 1/2 a pound of salt to 5 gallons of water for a non eating ray hasnt worked for me. It entered the salt, basically sat there and did nothing and 15 minutes later, stuck it back in the tank, and then basically curled up and died within the next 1/2 an hour.

well gshock sorry for the loss. and cal if it works for you it works maybe your doing something a lil different. and for me unless they turn into skin and bones and wont accept anything at all i think i will just be happy with what little they are eating plus i got black worms in today and they seem to be good. but keep us posted calgaryflames
