Best Beginner Monster?

I'd say go with Flowerhorn and Red Devil. Their absurdly large forehead makes them pretty unique.

he said 55 not 155
NO red d and flowers are why why to big

If you want to stick as big a fish in there as possible without killing it go for a kissing gour there all of a foot and they take the abuse of newbies well there right up there with seng polys but have a bigger body mass to be called a monster but ether or work work well no Oscars

My first monster fish i still have, he is a brackish water south american stone lionfish, batrachomoeus trispinosus. he requires some salt in his water, but since i have a biotope for south american cichlids, i have a slightly acidic ph and just enough salt to be noticeable. he is thriving. they can be hard to aquire though. other than that i would recomend a bichir or eel.

If you're thinking freshwater...
My first 55 freshwater monster I got myself was a Green Terror and it got very large and very fun very fast. That fish had so much attitude I was blown away. It would organize the tank specifically the way it wanted it to be. My ex put a purple and green plant(can't remember the name but she loved it) in the tank and that fish dug it out of the gravel and didn't stop attacking it until we took it out of the tank. Or a Wolffish,

But if you go with a saltwater monster... I would suggest a moray eel. They are really easy to take care of. And really fun to feed. Just watch your fingers.

In a 55g I think your best option for a somewhat larger fish would be a JD. They are very hardy and can look great. I've even heard of people keeping pairs in a 55g with some dithers. Could be a real nice tank.

Well, to my understanding, setting up Saltwater Aquariums isn't the easiest thing for the complete novice fish keeper to be doing.

And even if it is perfectly possible, or not too laborious a task, wouldn't it just stay in its hide cave all of the time, and just generally be a bore? And what other fish can it be kept with?

You can keep clownfish, angels, or lion fish with them aslong as they dont fit in there mouth you can keep it with them. And there not always in there cave. Once they grow to you most times they will great you by coming out.
