Actually, my old minnow sump is still full of green plastic army soldiers and barrel-O-monkey pieces.

:raspberry

I took a couple out so you can see what I'm talking about. I washed some of the 'fish dust' off of them.

Hey oddball, what other common objects have you heard of for filter media?

I'm about to buy an fx5 for $300, the crazy thing is the commercial filter media(fluval, ehiem) is probably going to cost about the same as the pump!

I have spoken with steve about scrubbers(you may be getting an email soon ;) i'm also searching australia high and low for them ) but is there anything else that i can use?

cheers for any help mate.

My wider wet/dry filters use floor stripper pads. They're made of the same polyethylene plastic but are a little stiffer. They work great for large filters pushing alot of water since they don't compress under pressure as much as scrubbies or other materials do. They're available in a wide range of diameters and thickness. And, I've found them on occassion for US.99 cents for a 5-pack (ebay). Here's a pic of the pads, from a New Zealand company. So, you shouldn't have a problem finding them locally.

BTW, who's ripping you off on the FX5? I bought 3 of them, off ebay, for $185 + $38 shipping/each.

Is that US$185/each? + shipping.... total US$223/each? or are you saying $185 for all 3? plus $38 each shipping

Everythings more expensive in aus:irked: you could probably get kangaroo meat cheaper than me

AU$300 is a great price i thought:confused: one store i know of has them for 300, a couple have them for 320-350 and most are 400+....... RRP is $495

Thanks for the info mate, i'll have a look around! I'll post a pic of some scouring pads when i get home, lf you could let me know what you think that would be awesome.

Thanks again

u can also use the plastic hair curlers, and stack them, iv used them for over 3 years in my hob pengun 330, along with the bio whele, with good results, also good in big filters , put a bunch of curlers in a bag!!

the local ladies are gonna have a hard time cleaning there dishes with the last trip I mad to the local dollar stores I hit 6 of them and came home with 60$ worth of potscrubbers... they all looked at me like I was crazt when I was at the register with just a cart load of scrubbers..... I told them that I was a dishwasher and my boss made me buy my own tools.....

I have some unused lanscaping cloth, the mesh kind that water permeates. I'm thinking of cutting it into strips and stuffing a wad in my new filter setup. Does anyone have any thoughts on this, pro or con?
