there is one problem with the sponge you are using.. it will rot.. which is why we use plastic pot scrubbies..

wow.. i should have listened to you. i took a look at my sump today and found that the six large sponges were are gone and there was an inch of mold covered over everything in the sump. i spent around 2 and a half hours cleaning it out. i emptied the sump and cleaned all the media (killing all the bacteria) i also did a 20% WC.

lol. thats what everyone was telling you from the beginning.

if you want a cheap mechanical media, just go with poly-fill/ quilt batting. its like $% for a huge roll at walmart.
and scrubbies are super cheap too if you have a "dollar store" or something like that, near you. otherwise, just hit up zennzo. he can hook it up.

yeah... i use scouring pads and quilt batting now. i also use the fluval foam blocks.

cant beleive that companies charge so much for a unit like this... DIY units get the job done fine and are customizable... with more money left over to buy other chit... Love DIY projects.. good job guys..
No reason to pay 500 for nice looking when the thing hides under a cabinet.. Building my 30g long sump as we speak.

yeah. instead of getting scrubbies i filled up the bucket with 720 cut up straws. they act the same way as the ceramic rings do. they have great surface area because of the inside and outside of the tube and because you can fit a lot into a small area.

And 1000 green plastic army men for a dollar! They have a ton of surface area too. +1 for the cut-up straws also.
