The marineland is a good heater the failure rate is low. Every brand of heater has malfunctioned at some point and killed peoples fish. I would just keep using them if their working fine.

Touche...I exploded a jager when I was probably 12 or so. Wasnt paying attention during an h2o change, dropped the h2o level below, and then dumped significantly cooler water into the tank...and onto the heater. :grinno:

not so sure if the marineland failure rate is really all that low relative to the ebos..

even my LFS says that in the last two years they have had so many come back with problems, splitting open etc.

before that, there were few problems with the stealths.

something changed with them a few years ago.

if you already have an older stealth, you are probably fine.

but it seems the newer ones over the last two years or so are apparently more prone to problems.

they used to 'push them' but they don't anymore because of these issues with customers coming back in.

I used that new Fluval Heater the one with the digital Reading on it also it changes color depending on water temps. to cold turns blue to hot Turns red and sett temp it turns green they make them for 100gallon tanks just might need to buy two of them

Hunt down the old green Ebo-jagers from the 80's and 90's. Every single one I have came to me filthy and used, I cleaned them, and they've worked like magic. My Via-Aqua was amazing because of the external thermostat and remote sensor, but even though I bought it new it died after five years. These Ebo heaters seem to live forever and hold temps precisely.

get a heater controller

Agreed.

I currently use titanium heaters with built in controllers. There's no way those are exploding. I am running a single 200 watt heater in a 125g for the summer time (soon to be upgraded for winter) and it keeps the temp exactly where I want it.

Other heaters you might like to look at with "newer" technology are the Fluval heaters (forget their name) and the Rena smartheaters. The Rena's can be plumbed inline or hung in the tank.

The 3 are brand new still in the box.....waiting to move here real soon and then will set up the 180. The one marinland I had that failed was pretty old not sure but many years. I am not switching because one failed that I had for a long time but there have been a few of the newer models on here that have split\exploded. I have some older mairnland stealth that are fine in other tanks and am not worried about them just don't want the brand new ones anymore.

I've just culled my Visa-Therm after many years and two of them finally cracking pyrex glass in the tanks. I've never seen a fish killed by a broken heater. If it shorts in the water you'd pull a breaker. Is this an urban myth or have I just been lucky?
Titanium body, inline, or case protected works, as all of you have noted. "sans" drama:)

What I HAVE DONE is short circuited a salt water tank by using a stainless steel thermometer and had instant Octopus soup "avec" a hard hit on the rest of the tank.
And I should have known better:)

The Marineland Stealths are the first heaters I have ever seen that literally EXPLODED and broke the glass on tanks. Sure all brand heaters have stayed on and cooked fish, but I have never seen one take out the actual tank.

I use a Hydor ETH and its rock solid. I also use a Ebo Jager and it seems to work quite well.
