Best Large Cichlid for 135 gallon

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well I went to get 4...ended up with 12! Well not actually 12 because one died on the way home (caught in the corner of the bag I think) and the other was dead this morning when I got up. Both were 2 of the smallest so 10 is still way more than I anticipated getting. I think i've got at least 2 promising specimens in this group. The others are too small to tell right now and they haven't pealed so no telling what color they will turn out to be.

This guy is the biggest one. He's about 2.5-3 inches right now. Much paler than many of the others so I'm hoping that means some interesting markings and predominantly white. We'll see

This one appears to be white already and is probably the 2nd or 3rd largest. He's also the least shy. Already up at the glass staring me down.

sevs and sajicas for me sevs and sajicas for me , 10 was how many midas I started with too. The ones I got were slightly larger and some peeled already so it was easy with the first round of cuts and I rehomed 3 quickly. The batch I have are all pretty boring orange with only one unique looking one among them so its not been difficult to pick keepers.

Seeing what the papa looked like, I dont think you are going to have it as easy to pick ones to rehome. I think you are going to have some good looking fish to have to pick from. I envy you for that as I look at my sea of orange, lol.

And dont be surprised if the Petsmart mutt turns out to be the favorite!

Haha yeah. I may have to rehome the petsmart mutt before I get too attached!

The petsmart mutt is a lot bigger than these guys so I'm going to have to keep them separated for a while I think. The mutt has a 20 long to him/herself so he'll be good for a while

The creamsicle male that the breeder owns is a beauty

Almost 8 yrs ago I started with a dozen young cits, and it didn't take long for the one in the center to dominate all others. Within a few months I was rehoming the rest due to them being punked so badly. (in a 125 gallon)

That piebald midas in the center of the pic above, all grown up.

Yeah, he never did learn to play nice with other fish. He allowed a pleco in that tank for a long period of time, over a year I think, and then one day I came home to find the pleco bit in half. He's been flying solo ever since.

My Petsmart mutt from years ago, that was equally as savage. Not even fully mature at the time of that photo. My biggest regret in this hobby was rehoming this fish, due to his aggression towards tank mates that I had attempted with him, and with limited tank space I ignorantly felt I deserved a pure specimen, over one with more of a mixed pedigree. Such a character he was, I still miss this fish, so be careful or you may find that you need another tank, instead of rehoming. :)

Wow you've given me something to think about. Both fish are beautiful.
