Which would you consider the best dither/target fish for large fish like trimac, cuban and a grammodes?

Do bucktooth tetras school?

Bucktooth tetra do school, but I have heard that they eat the scales off of larger fish. IMO, nothing beats a large school of rainbowfish.

an issue with the exodons is that it would also be shame to lose them if they get picked off by the cichlids

I use convicts for dithers and they work better than anything for me. They all hang together and cruise the tank, they reproduce like crazy so you always have them. If youre going to try and breed them in the tank with your main fish, just make sure they are a small breeding pair. A big one will take on just about anyone, regardless of their size.

Also, if your grammode is small right now, the convicts make them feel more comfortable being out and about and they dont hide at all...thinking they blend in with the cons Im guessing.

my rainbows are quick enough to thrive with my oscars. theye got a lot of nice color and add movement to the tank

Silver Dollars , Rainbows or maybe Giant Danios ,. Is what i would think about getting . :(

my only issue with using the convicts is that they would take up "territory" in the tank that is otherwise best left for the larger cichlids, the schooling fish won't do that
