my only issue with using the convicts is that they would take up "territory" in the tank that is otherwise best left for the larger cichlids, the schooling fish won't do that

I agree 100%. I stopped using convicts after my former 13" Jag lost his eye to a pair of breeding convicts. They're very territorial and will defend it ferociously.

well, Ive never experienced issues like that, but the cons I use arent ever near the size of my main fish. I wasnt suggesting putting 15 - 4 inch cons in a tank with equal sized fish you want them to act as dithers to...just small ones that wouldnt stand a chance against your main fish.

But I think the problem with that is the fact that depending on the individual's personality, it may be able to stand more or less of a chance against your main fish compared to others, regardless of size. Especially if any pair off, because convicts will fight off fish many times their own size. And if they aren't strong enough to win a fight with the main fish then if they do try to start a fight they may lose and just get killed/eaten depending on the fish they are up against. Cheaper tetras, barbs, etc. are much more simple to make work as dithers and pose less of a risk to the main fish.

Well, as I see it, your "hypothetic situation" is the case you face when putting more than 1 fish in any tank, so its no bigger risk...and with tetras and barbs, they stand the chance to (and usually do) get eaten or killed as well.

Also, cons in large groups act differently than a single pair in a tank.

So, like I said, Ive NEVER experienced a problem doing this as long as Ive kept fish, so there is no problem with it as far as Im concerned. The only thing that I will say that could possibly make a difference, is tank size. I wouldnt recommend doing this in a 55 or probably even a 125.

I think the exos will destroy anything in the tank. They are little crazies.

i'm a fan of silver dollars personally, mainly because they won't fit in most fish's mouths. i've tried tiger barbs, raibbows and giant danios and they slowly but surely disappeared.
