If your prepared to go salt water, nothing I have owned ever came close to a porcupine puffer fish.
Without doubt the most personable, interactive and pet like fish I have ever owned. They also look like ET and love to be petted.

Here is Rufus, not the most colourful but a great personality. Even with Midas it's not a given tho, need to grow out several and pic the most confident one pal.

A bit contradictory to my advice no, he came from a member of the british cichlid association originally, I can't be certain really but he does look like what he was sold to me as.
That's your predicament now. A true Midas is a very rare fish if you discount all the hybrids/midevils.
Where are you? The best you can do is find a cichlid club and hope someone keeps Midas or settle for a LFS mutt...
Mutts are cool but always be a mutt:-)

So Rapps has some Amphilophus sagittae (Creamsickle)
I am considering getting 6, grow out, let them pair up keep the best pair, rehome the rest.
My questions are
1) how big 12in range?
2) can keep with catfish,plecos?
3) dithers? Sailfin Mollys, Congo tetras, skip dithers they will shred them
4) plants? Or keep it to rocks driftwood

They will be going in my new 125g. Is this big enough for a pair? Or should I just do a single male?

Edit:Think I could also grow out an oscar boyfriend for Toni at the same time. All would be 1.5in or so to start with

I'm located in london so the only good fish stores near me are an hour away and there really not that reliable anyway, there's wildwoods which is good but they don't have any for sale right now

A pair may work in a 125 but Midas aren't always the friendliest, I've seen many people keep catfish, bichirs and plecos with Midas. As for dithers I wouldn't know but plants I would say are slim in working but java fern and Anubias may work
