Good to hear there thriving, I also love the natural look with some alge, but I found that it can take overhand (getting on plants) and that's not what I want. So I try to control it by keeping nitrate low and don't letting the lights on for to long.
Cheers
No, no difference in behavior. They spend periods at rest & periods in motion whether the lights are on or off. I would estimate about a third of the floor space in the tank is situated beneath something, out of direct light altogether.
If anything, while at rest, if the lights are on they tend to take refuge under the wood. If the lights are off, they rest anywhere.
Why did I do it? I was trying to encourage the growth of a particular type of algae that I find attractive. Call me crazy.
While I got what I wanted, in the end I found it was too difficult to maintain so reverted back to a 12on/12off lighting scheme.
As far as stress on the fish.....perhaps you're onto something there to some degree or another. In all honesty though, snatching them from their natural environment and putting them on display in see-thru boxes could be considered stressful in some circles.
I guess my point being, I did'nt see this as torturing my fish in any way. In the grand scheme of things, I'd say they've got a pretty cushy life.
