Bichirs in a planted paludarium?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
a big black ghost knife would be good. it sounds like most other members know at least 10x as many bichir as I do

As for the BGK I can get around 9-10inches and the Endli I can get at either 2 or 4-5 inches. Would either one of these combinations work or would the BGK still have to be bigger.

Had a BGK in with polys and the bichirs attacked its tail caught fin rot and lost most of its tail, personally wouldn't suggest putting them in the same aquarium.

What about a different Knifefish with them? Was the one that attacked a more aggressive species? That why I was steering away from the ornate So I could get a few other large bottom dwellers

I actually think 1 of my Ornates attacked it's tail. I think a African knife would do fine with smaller upper jaws.

Most upper jaws grow smaller, like mokelembembe, retropinnis, beuttikoferi, senegal, delhezi , palmas polli, and palmas palmas, looking at 8"-14" depends if wild caught or captive breed. Then the big trio that grows 15"+ but are upper jaw are teugelsi, weeksii and ornate.
For the lower jaws all grow from 18"+ all endlicheri varients, all lapradei varients, PBB, congicus, and ansorgii.

If you dont like cichlids you can go for characin like pinktail, african pike/odoe pike or gars for top swimmers, or you can do like bala sharks and tinfoil barb, they too grow 10"-12" kno4te kno4te tlindsey tlindsey J jaws7777 Vancouver_98683 Vancouver_98683 moe214 moe214 can give you more ideas for top swimmers.

Have you consider turtles, they will be great with bichirs, and be nice to go in land and water with no problem.
Turtles aren't fish friendly... and they'd eventually probably require a larger tank, they'd also need more then three inch width to bask on and will require much more maintenance.

Also since the tank will only be 20" wide I'd stick to upper jaws if no plan of upgrade are in the future. I'd also stay away from gars. As stated you'll probably wanna stick to some characin for a mid to top dweller. Or you can add more bottom dwellers like catfish or other oddballs. And bgk, with the right genetics, and years down the road, will be to big for that width as well. I've seen a large 18"+ one in my lfs in a 75 till it was sold, it was a sight to behold, but it looked much to big for the tank in every sense. What about red tail barracudas? They grow slow however, but if you stick to upper jaws it should work out fine. You can do spotted characin pike maybe, if you get the smaller species. You can try species of barbs too.
