Bichirs in a planted paludarium?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks, I never heard of this one. It looks awesome. How many do you think I can have in a 72'x20" footprint with around 140-150 gallons maybe 200 gallons if I sump it

Definitely sump it lol. You will be happy you did. The added water volume and ease of maintenance make the initial work well worth it.

Upper jaws stay smaller like polyaddict mentioned. Llwer jaws get larger and bave more of a prehistoric dino/croc look to them. Lapradei, endlicheri, congicus, pbb, koloton/koliba (laps) sp.dabola are lower jaws.

Weeksii, teugs, and ornate are large growing upper jaws

I have bichirs in a planted tank but they are smaller upper jaws. It will be a bit harder to do with lower jaws because they need more physical space when large, including room to swim, but they shouldn't bother the plants. I find that mine like them, but then they also hide in them so I am trying to find the balance of plants but yet being able to see my fish. :) If you're not stuck on having substrate plants like swords and vals and stick witih plants that you can tie off/float that might work best with LJs.

I don't know, I love the LJs but if you want a more densely planted tank with different tankmates in there, you might do better with some of the lower jaws and / or reed/ropefish.

Can you show me a visual as to what you are planning? I don't think I fully understand what you're doing. It sounds cool though.

Burbotman Burbotman should be able to provide useful insight as he has lower jaws and plants.

I have one fake plant surrounded by rocks lol used to some smaller fake plants but everyrhing would get shoved around when ever they got spooked.

I think you would have more success with floating plants and annubias types that can be tied to dw or rocks

I need a good floating plant. What would you suggest? I have a fluval fresh and plant 2.0 light so would I need to dose ferts?

my suggestions would be limited as I'm not really into plants but I have used Brazilian penny wort and loved it. I just picked up some water lettuce but because of the overflows in my tank they will need to be placed in the sump.

I'm going to go with duckweed. I see a lot of people hate it because it takes over but that's what I want.

If your state allows it. I'd suggest dwarf water lettuce. magpie magpie :)

plus one I really like the look of the Water Lettuce if I didn't have overflows I would definitely put it in the main tank
