Black Ghost Knife

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hi guys, I'm new but thought i'd make my first post a BGK one :)

I purchased a BGK 8 years ago when I was a complete newbie to the hobby, housing the 1 inch long knife in my 20 gallon, before upgrading to a 55. He's now set to go into a 100 gallon alongside some Discus.

To share what I've learned about the fish, mine would only eat live/frozen food at a small size and age, although 8 years later he now eats flake, cichlid pellets, and whatever else excluding veg.

They will hide a lot, and don't appreciate sharing hiding places, though with no real teeth so to speak, I've never seen damage to other fish.

Current tankmates are 10x tiger barbs, a raphael cat, and 1 male 4 inch convict; I luckily managed to get a convict who doesn't pay any attention to the knife, however this only happened through trial and error, as many will know cichlids have their own personalities!

I'll be sad to see my knife go but it is better in the long run, he has grown slowly but continually throughout the years so I can't tell exactly just how much he has been stunted.

That's my experience anyway :)

Yes he'll do that often, and small fish like neons will mysteriously disappear at night; but for the most part they tend to keep to themselves. I've never seen my knife actively seek to engage in fights in the open aquarium space
