Black Pete

Bottom line is treat others the way you would want to be treated EVEN if they are different than you. Tradition wise its hard. If those "Chimney Divers" are really based off Blacks then blacks should have a say in how they are portrayed if they feel it is negative. Americans posting: Amphilophus88 has a point, the situation he is having in his country seems to be the exact one we have had recently with the Washington REDSKINS NFL team. For many people the name and brand of the Redskins are an American Tradition but many Native Americans are offended by it. We have the same issues here in the US. What you guys think?

Well I am never really offensive to people.
I have been insulted for "f*cking Dutchman" a lot more then that I have said things like that to non-white people.
I wouldn't even care if they would built a mosque in the neighbourhood. Just as long as everyone minds their own business and doesn't try to end our traditions and doesn't force their religion on me I couldn't care less.

Now correct me if I'm wrong, but I got the impression that most Americans aren't too happy with the never-ending flood of Mexican immigrants either.

Was watching some kind of American comedian saying "it's good to be back in the USA, where the people speak spanish".
I know it's comedy but I also know there are some areas where Spanish is the most-used language. Or Mexicans hanging their flag over the American flag on a public building.

You want to call that nice developments? I think most of you Americans in those situations get just as protective and defensive as I am. And if not, then where did the patriotism go?

Its here where im gonna bow out since I live in the West ;). Its been great talking with you guys very good discussion, and I do think it is good to talk about these things. Bottom line no matter what is remember that we are all people despite our small differences and, as cheesy as it sounds, LOVE > HATE

Yes it is great that it is possible to have such discussions. And the country here is quite nice, I have nothing to complain about.. there are just some things that blow my mind.

You are all over the place with this thread but better watch it with the Obama stuff lest you want the thread to be closed...The main thing with the Mexicans is whether or not they are here legally, the problem most people have with them is when they are not..

I think that is a very good argument and may be the reason yes.
Blackface.. well I learn something new every day.

Because a while ago I read this:
"Obama is widening the race gap, rather than working to make a more race-blind society.

In late July, Obama signed an executive order that lets black students get away with bad behavior. Not only is this discriminatory, it also does more harm than good.

.

This is the first I've heard of that executive order and I am SURE there is more to it than that.
This is the danger of quoting out of context.

Not to derail, but if students that find subjects harder get remedial classes,
and students that are dyslexic get extra time in exams,
perhaps students with predispositions to growing up in more challenging domestic challenges should not consistently punished (maybe because teachers have observed punishment makes it worse, perhaps treating the underlying issue makes a more positive change).
I believe that people that work in the education sector have a better understanding of this area of expertise, and how to work within it, than we do.
Perhaps the president was advised to do so by his advisers.

What I found offensive about 'Black Pete' is the song that is sung.
Why didn't you post the song lyrics ?

Before I cast judgement and influence the various opinions here, why don't you post the lyrics to the song Amphilophus88...

Ah okay I suppose that would make sense.

What's wrong with the Obama stuff? Is it not true or something?

The lyrics from the sinterklaas song? Okay I'll look them up and sort of try to translate them. But I don't remember that is was an offensive song? Maybe you mean another song since their is more then one.

The best-known one is "daarginds komt de stoomboot" which is something like "there comes the steamboat (if that is even the correct word for it). You mean that one?
