The pics of that black tip in that tank hurt to look at. No way it's going to live. By the wya, black tips getting over 6 feet is very normal. And I really can't believe you compared keeping a ram vent shark to an arapaima. Just proves someone doesn't know what they are doing. Even with that said, I know John has a place much bigger for them to go when the time comes. That black tip is already in something WAY too small.

The guy that runs "aquazoo" here in NNY had two black tips in a several thousand gallon for 13+ years. One died then a couple months later the other died too. He shipped them to a university and the marine biologists were amazed because they usually don't make to that age in the wild or in aquariums.

This guy is quite experienced and I usually go there and pay for admission but mostly just go to ask for advice, I figure the price for admission is small for the experience he has.

As far as total specs for the tank and filtration. You would have to ask him that. I never bothered with the specs because I have no intention of making a tank that size or keeping sharks. The tank was pretty shallow but long and wide. If I had to guess I would say it was over 10k.

Thanks Matt...I know comparing the black tip to the arapaima was a bit of a stretch, but it does seem that there is some prejudice when it comes to flaming on this board. I hold John in the highest regard and am very impressed with what he has done for Sam. I only wish the owner of this shark could prove he was doing the same.

"Just proves someone doesn't know what they are doing" - this one hurts...I've been in the game for twenty+ years and have had the opportunity to care for young lemon sharks in a 4000 gallon display tank. I am aware that the shark could reach 6ft in length and that at that size it would need much more space than an arapaima of the same size. It's a shame that these fish enter the hobby, but if this shark actually was kept in a 10,000 gallon tank it would lead a better life than most of the sharks that come into the hobby.

I love when people do this kind of stuff.. "OMG SHARK IN A 210g.!!!"
but I dont hear anyone complaining about bettas and goldfish in small, unfiltered fish bowls. Or how about those stupid 9x9" bird cage for parakeets. Or I know.. the damsel in the 5.5g AGA.. but he is a cheap damsel... if he dies just replace him, right?
Yet OMG 15" PORT JACKSON in a 210g. and the whole world has got to stop!
Now, I understand everyone being upset about the fact that the blacktip is in this tank but it seems like everyone gets their panties in a bunch when they see "the magnificent" shark in a 200g tank and they go.. "Well, when its fully grown it will need a MUCH larger tank...YOU ARE SOO IRRESPONSABLE. You shouldnt even own fish.. What a moron"
Idk... my point is people see banded cat sharks in 150g. tanks and FREAK OUT but whos complaining about bettas in their unfiltered bowls? Not many people. Honestly.. whens the last time you saw someone with a 4 foot banded cat shark?
Ya, usually they die waaaayyy before they ever reach 4ft except in public aquariums.
thats JMO
Im not sticking up for the fact that he did this because in my opinion it is cruel..esp. with a requeim [spelling?] shark, im just saying.. there are other things that dont get preached b/c the animal is somehow inferior compared to the sharks.

WTF? Read general aquaria discussion lately? If you search there are TONS of threads about how cruel it is to keep bettas or goldfish in bowls (not to mention other fish), and most of us don't even approve of goldfish in small tanks, whether filtered or not.
In general people may not care about that kind of stuff, but on THIS website most people don't agree with such practices.
