I am not a geneticist but I am a professional paleontologist ;). Hybrids gonna hybrid, who gives a **** if other people are stupid about it. As long as they aren't tattoo'd, injected or bred maliciously (aka suffer for a short 6 month life then die horribly, but sell cause pretty) then I think, ethically, you're completely fine. This ethical opinion comes from my brother, who by chance is doing his PhD in animal ethics lol. Well not directly from him, but tempered from years of discussion with him. He's a fish keeper and right now has Ryukins; if there is a fish out there that is ethically stupid to breed, it's them...but he's fine with it and is the expert so...yah. Ethically you're safe.

Yah man, enjoy. I know virtually nothing about this, so please look into it yourself: Health complications for parrot cichlids. If any exist, it's something you should get into this knowing about and knowing the best course of action as well as symptoms, especially early ones. Again, no idea if there even are any, just something that I would certainly do with a fish with a rather...non functional mouth. Lol. It sounds like you are on top of research though, so good for you. I researched my new Mesonauta for like a year and still had questions that I literally didn't think to look up beforehand (mainly the question of solo vs school) and it was answered here rather okay, so I feel alright having him alone so long as he doesn't show any stress. So near as I can tell, having only gone active with posting recently, this site is fantastic for helping you out with a lot of that.

happy fish keeping man, if someone hates on you just crush them with the list I provided (all artificially hybridized by people) and point out that humans are hybrids themselves. Combine that with a knowledge of any potential health complications and being prepared means you are almost certainly better equipped to give that fish a great life- better equipped than some moral butt hurt sour about hybrids existing.
 
Why complain about something you cant control everything mate with what they like regardless if you care or not from the tiniest to the largest of creatures why do people complain about what they cant control? Im just tired of wasteful complaining its life things mix.

I know it's a belaboured point. Hybrids don't really appeal to me but as long as they are kept healthy and fine then I really don't care. People keep uglier animals than blood parrot cichlids, so what do I care?

Edit: Also just cause I know it's gonna piss a few people off, Humans are a hybrid of a hybrid. After the chimpanzee/human split, it appears we interbred repeatedly. This is because "Different regions of the human and chimp genomes were found to have diverged at widely different times, and the two species' X chromosomes show a surprisingly recent divergence time."

Then after that was all done, we know that humans and neanderthals interbred- particularly Europeans, East Indians, Asians and first nations, with Europeans showing ~1-3% Neanderthal genetics. The most is in Northern Italty, though I personally am half German and show about 2.8% according to national geographic genome project that my brother contributed his genes to. This doesn't even take into account the potential for concurrent species like (potentially) Homo erectus and Homo sapiens to have mated. Remember: if a human can do, they will do. So getting all pissy about hybrids is technically a hilarious thing for people to do. (end divergence from topic, lol)

What is the grapefruit a hybrid of? but on a positive note, at least blood parrots are sterile. so they wont pollute the gene pool like flowerhorns
 
They are a trash fish. Your efforts would be much better spent on another species.
 
Ethical/Moral.

A fish looks good, will be in my tank. I am a hobbyist first of all. I collect fish, feed them, take care of them to enjoy.

Do I believe in conservation ? Yes yes and yes. Now it is not correct to breed hybrids and release them to the lakes. I do not support folks who buy fish for a hobby then release them to the lakes specially if the fish is not native to that lake.

Do I breed fish? Yes yes and yes. I do not breed to create a new fish. I only breed pure-bred fish as I intend to sell them.

Is it ok to breed blood parrots/flowerhorns etc ? I believe so as long as these are disclosed to the buyer and keep these fish in hobbyist tanks and not release them to the lakes !!

enjoy the hobby and do what is right for the environment.

I read somewhere they grow black spots when they get stressed, as do goldfish I believe. Thanks again mate

Personally the fancy goldfish are ugliest fish and they ain't even hybrids. Blood Parrots can easily outlived the fancy goldfish.

Blood Parrots are fertile, its just 98% males are sterile but the females are highly fertile.
