see IMO i would say this is the "blue" variant. another obvious difference for me is the scales. look at all the "blues" here on mfk. they all have pinkish highlights in the scales, much like the common silver aro.

but look at this one, not pink spots at all, and it's body is a sleek gunmetal color with black fins.

Lets just go with in tank pics, or even a close up out of tank.

Hell I can post a pics of a silver aro being held up by a fisherman and argue there is a green variant in the same manner as your arguing the black varient.

For the price these aros are being sold why even question it? Either buy one or don't. Columbian or Brazilian who cares maybe you'll get lucky and it will grow out to a nice dark one. I've bought quite a few fish from this seller in person, he knows his fish. If you have a personal problem with him don't bash him and try to ruin his future sales take it up with him personally.

well because that's all i could find :) maybe contacting the seller would product some adult pics. but for the time being, that's all i have. i can see the color difference, if you cant, there's nothing more i can do!

Not bashing him, but pretty hard not to. He is giving such information as that his blacks are from Venezuela and that the "colombian blues are a form of silver arowana". Yeah really sounds as if he knows his stuff.

There is no doubt in my mind that he is selling black arowana(Osteoglossum ferreirai) the pics in his other thread show that, but the rest is just mis-information.

I can see the color difference, anybody can. I just can understand how arowana look different underwater in artificial light and out of water in natural sunlight. Pull up badreverends thread on his dead 17" black see what ya think.

Wonder why ya can't find any in tank shots of this black varient? Maybe cause they don't exist.

There is no way the seller can have adults, according to him this is the firsttime in 15 years that this fish has been imported:nilly:

Only difference is the level of maturity, this is what makes for the color variants. They will all end up looking the same if you provide the same lighting.

The pics really show nothing but large adult blacks out of water and young black aros under water.

There is only Osteoglossum ferreirai, commonly known as black arowana and now within the past few years blue arowana. As I stated before the pics provided show large adult Osteoglossum ferreirai (black arowana) out of water and young Osteoglossum ferreirai(black arowana) within a tank.

Once again, Bderick67 is correct! It's one, and only Osteoglossum ferreirai. Call it whatever you want, black, blue, colombian, brazillian, etc... It's the same fish. You can't compare a fish caught out of water with a fish in a tank. Take a same arowana and put in a pond for a short period of time, its color looks different ;)
