Blue Botia compatibility

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just provide an elevated & complex hardscape w/ plenty of caves and crevasses. You'll likely find that the Modesta Botia isn't the aggressive monster that it's alleged to be.
The only real killer Botia I've ever kept was S. Helodes. That species is a true monster.
I do agree that the Modesta has a tendency to swim up stream & some precautions regarding filter plumbing must be made to accommodate them.
The Loaches on line folks seem a little self righteous.

I don't want to necessarily bash Loaches Online (as I'm also a member on there and their information is generally reasonable without the purists interfering), but as was rightly pointed out, the purists can bash us all they want.
Whether or not (the latter it will be, as I agree there's no point in taking it to them) we were to confront them, it's highly unlikely they'd get less self righteous, and it wouldn't make them right.

I have many caves and despite this and size of knivefish my blue botia killed this fish...And blue botia was 3 times shorter than him.

I know the Modesta are strong, solidly built Botias & can pack a punch. Sorry things didn't work out well for you.

I had remove Modesta and buy new carapo...And you are right with Botia helodes. This fish was nightmare for other fishes i had.Even ctenopoma was afraid of her.

what other tankmates were there as well?

adult ctenopoma, raphael catfish, botia loachata +botia modesta and carapo. But carapo was the slowest fish by feeding...This was another big problem.the fish which is outcompeted in feeding usually dies sooner or later...

this is why we encourage target feeding to ensure they still get to eat. I have to target feed my 13” L24 (very slow eater) so she gets food when current tank is full of clown loaches rainbowfish, Arulius barbs roselines are fed first very busy “in your face fish” i then use a 1/2 pvc pipe to drop in the food sticks or use prong to give her cut up protein like shrimp but the barbs snatch it out of her mouth when shes in mid chew if I didnt feed them enough.

Lol. After all these, I m not sure if I should get the modesta. ?‍♂️

Not sure if it's already been mentioned, but if you do choose to get them and run into problems, completely redoing the aquascaping of the tank can often sort those problems out.
