It stands to reason that the most aggressive Modesta would get the lions share of the available food, which might explain size differences.
The Modesta in question might simply be a stocky female. The females grow a little bigger than the males.

A stocky female it is. I doubt she gets the lions share of the food, as she's mostly in her mini cave.. laying sideways. ?
I would say bigger, but not significantly. And possibly with a large group of modesta, you don't actually know who is the alpha.
With mine, it's obvious who's the alpha. She disrupts skirmishes in a matter of seconds. She just chases, the rest flee. No circling whatsoever.

That sounds about right for an alpha. Going by how my clown loach alpha behaves at least.

Much better than no images. This species is one I quite admire for the combination of blue and red.
Rather looking like bulked up rainbow sharks. Any idea how to bring out the blue in them?
