A. he probably will only get store credit

B. it's not going to stop it. how many people go to pet stores, buy fish they know nothing about, then take them home and they die for one reason or another. thousands. the market will still be there until the store itself decides to stop ordering.

I don't like posting twice unless asked a question, however I do feel strongly about this. If we don't returne the fish for a cash refund the bottom line is they made a sale. Keeping it and giving it a good home sounds great and is, but it still doesn't matter in the bigger picture of stopping the practice you have to returne it if there is any chance to stop this torture.

Exactly, it's a cute notion that you can save the fish you bought, but humanizing that one particular fish and nursing it back to health is sending the message that the product is selling and should continue to be produced.

The people dying fish don't look at them as animals they're considered product, and so long as a product sells for whatever reason it's going to continue to be produced. The best thing that could happen is that your lfs gets stuck with a tank full of fish thier customers are opposed to buying, that sends the message that the dyed fish aren't wanted and logically will stop being produced. Or we can humanize the survivors and subject thousands more specimens to the same process because someone out there will take pity and try to save them...

Bring the fish back and get a refund if you oppose the practice.

I agree with the above proposed compromise. Keep the fish and give him good care but go into that store and raise some hell

x2 . . . as noted, even if the OP returns it, he'll probably just get store credit, which he'll still have to use at the store.

instead, if truly motivated, the OP can go back to the store and tell the manager that he was misinformed (and maybe the LFS was too), and the fish is not a "rare breed" but is in fact dyed and that this practice is unacceptable.

if the manager says the store will continue to sell these fish, the only real recourse the OP - - or any of us - - would have is to not shop there any more.

i know what your thinking.. but one fish is not going to make any bit of difference one way or the other.. they will sell it to the next person just as easy... it is the wholesalers that need to know.. and the LFS stores .. they need to hear us complain... but bringing the little guy back will have no influence one way or the other.. but all of us should we see them should mention how unethical it is i will continue to teach people not to purchase the fish in first place. One little $5 fish is nothing to them.

Exactly. Thank you liz. I'm not agreeing with dyed fish at all but the market will remain. people should be educated about the process but the return will help nothing.

To my point, what will make it stop? They can't be allowed to make a sale on that fish. If they will only give you a store credit, take some food tell them what you think and don't go back. This can't become emotional, life isn't all teddy bears and hearts stick them with 25 fish they can't get rid of. Thay'll stop ordering them, one person can make a differance. I'm not against your point i'm tired of this crap. Next time you go to the lfs thay'll have a Poodle X Dovii what's that a Doviidoole? Come on!

the point is they can get rid of them. probably fairly easily. kind of like selling pacu at petsmart. a bad idea, but they sell plenty of them to unknowing people. the op will know all of this for next time and hopefully spread the word. there is no immediate fix for the problem, if there ever is one.
