If you cycle the tank then swap the filter, you start all over again. Its about cycling the filter more than the tank itself.

any idea of the age of the tank? i got a 5 X 3 with a leak (only) can not get it to seal as the old glass flexes, buy a lizard or sell it on as a viperium. buy a perfick tank and start over. good luck

this tank is around 35 yrs old and is5/8 glass.i grew up walking 6 miles one way almost every day on summer break.its only been around a month.but its holding water.the fx5 isnt the filter for this tank.its the filter off my 70 thats been back up and running since i took the pond down for the winter.the filter for the 300 is a 44 gal rubber maid sump.im useing the fx5 to seed the tank.i have 350 pot scrubbies coming this week to throw into the sump.after everything has been running awhile the fx5 will be removed

The tank looks good. I would still be nervous about the patch. I just went through an issue with my 225 that started leaking in my house. Luckily there was only about 40gallons on the floor when I got home. But I had to move fast cause 225 gallons woul more than likely cause a remodel to my home. I had to remove the bottom piece of glass cause it was seperated to where the silicone would not seal. It only took an hour or so to remove and replace.
Last time I needed a piece of glass I found a guy in construction and he ordered it for me at his cost. which was half price of all the local glass places.
One thought I had is if you were to cut some plywood that would sit inside the bottom frame undermeath the tank, this would takee all the pressure off the glass and transfer it to the plywood therefor your risk would be minimal rather than just relying on the patch. The patch is doing nothin for the amount of wieght that resting there. 300 gallons of water alone is 2400 lbs.

Good luck

its in an unfinished basement and the drain is about 6 ft away.i do have plywood under it.there is also a piece of plexie on the bottom.dont think thats making contact with the wood though.never thought of talking to a construction guy about glass.and i did only check one glass place.the onlty thing the tank can wreck in the basementis some free furniture or my furnace.furnace wouldnt be good

how about a 2 paneled tank 16+' about 4' wide:).wife says no reptiles.then i would still have the 2 end pcs and get the broken end cut off the bottom for another pane.or an 8' x8' outside corner tank.we will save these ideas for when i move.im not gonna move that tank out of my basment in one pc.

Even checking different glass companies would be a huge benefit. I have gotten qoutes that were no where near eachother but the places were only 1 mile apart. Wher are you located??? I would recomend that you make sure that something ply wood plexi or anything fills the void under your tank to take the pressure off the glass.

I understand that you don't have much concern about what is in the surrounding area of your tank. What about the fish??? Or the time and effort to make this project a success. Patience is a virtue and I am not the best at practicing that but have learned that the hard way as well.
