Brackish Water Questions

The cheaper, more generic, the better. Should just say ammonia on the bottle & not suds up when you shake it. Ace hardware is where a lot of folks have found it--their generic brand.

Ok im gonna swing by a hardware store and ask for ammonia.

It was so horrible! I went by Petalnd discounts today to pick up some bags to transport the freshwater fish Im selling and I look and I see a 10 gallon tank with 8 shark catfish probably around 3 inches each, 1 green scat and a bunch of african cichlids in this tank with rock substrate and probably no salt in the tank. The little 4 inch scat was in a corner with his head down and he looked all depressed.

I felt so bad to see this! But like PufferPunk said, if we "rescue" them then we only add to the problem and they will order more of them.

I just thought I would share this with you all.

Take a look at the GSPs at Walmart if you really want to get upset.

So i got all my stuff today I got marine salt, my Instant Ocean Hydrometer and I washed out the old crushed coral and poured it into the tank.

So now my tank is super cloudy the filter is still running and I poured in like 2 cups of salt into the tank.

I took the hydrometer and filled it up with water and it reads 1.000 .... when I use normal tap water it reads the same.

Maybe I didnt put in enough.....

Oh well... I'll try to put in some more tomorrow morning.

How many gallons if the tank again? What fish are you planning on keeping & what SG are they at in the shop? That's the SG you cycle the tank at.

To reduce the cloudiness, add filter floss to a HOB filter & change as it gets clogged.

75 Gallon tank.

Well...My pH went up and the CC is buffering quit well. Theres already filter floss in my canister. I am running an Eheim 2217.

I guess it may take a few days for the cloudiness to go away.

Well I just used my Instant Ocean Hydrometer this morning. I first tested the tap water and it read a perfecr 1.000. After that I used the tank water and it read in between 1.000-1.004 , So i'd say either 1.001 or 1.002.

I'll just leave it at that for this week and then next week, I'll throw in some more salt.

I don't understand--are you cycling this tank right now? Do you know if your LFS keeps their BW fish in BW or FW?

You told me that the best bet since I was converting from FW to BW was to ensure that the BB was still present. You said that fishless cycling was best. So I didnt buy any fish!

I am letting the tank run..... I am in process of getting some ammonia to get the cycle going.

Is this wrong now?

Should I just start buying fish and acclimating them to a tank that may not be fully cycled?
