Breeding Bullheads

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've got an empty 75g I'm thinking of using for something like this. Initially I'd like to try some black bullheads, and after that see if I can get some cross of my prettiest ones with some really nice florida browns like the ones I used to have for the sake of seeing what they'd turn out like. This time around I'm going to keep a good log of growth rate and diet as they mature.

Should have the tank up and running in a week or two after I finish sculpting the background for it.

Not sure how well this will go but my plan as of now is to wild catch 3-5 (4-6" fish) yellows right before spawning season and place them in a 30 long for breeding. Wish I had a larger tank to work with, but I don't. I'll give details if this plan works.

Wow, indeed they are! Time flies, can't believe that's already on again. Feels like yesterday that I was raising my florida browns in a brand new 55g from PetCo :)

Now my perfectly laid plans have been thrown into chaos with "Can I fit another tank in here?". Maybe I can cash in the 75, replace it with a 120 to better use the space, and squeeze a 55 in somewhere... that way I can have my coral cats project running along side the bullhead breeding initiative, lol.

Bullheads in a 30, or even a 75? Come on guys.

I'd love to see them bred - but you guys need to be realistic about their requirements.

My friend bred them years ago in a 55 with gravel substrate.

Elaborate please. Small bullheads that are still mature enough to breed, so ones about 4-6", will be fine in a 30, 55, and especially a 75 for a good while.

We are talking about a 30 gallon fish tank dude. unless you have the recources to accommodate it ie larger tank why put the fish in a tank that isnt suitable?
