Buddy the BP

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That’s what I figured. I would stay away from anything too big or mean then.
If you can confirm the parrot’s gender then you can attempt to breed it with something like a convict.
Yeah, let's keep the breeding out of the picture until I have this one figured out....

Does anyone easily have the process for vent checking a BP? I have searched here but haven't found a clear enough picture for me to follow.

Operation gender reveal is under way...

Female parrots have a big rounded tube, males a pointy thing like a triangle. Buddy may be a loner. Pretty much all my parrots are, so I make their tanks bright and interesting with a hide, marbles, plants, and hollow balls to play with. They love bubblers. All in 38 gallon solo except for one who is in the main tank. Due to their size I'm looking to upgrade to 50 gallon (less work) and will possibly add a cory to each.

Try a group of cories! And a group of spotted dollars. I find super aggressive parrots need diversions to burn off their excess energy.

My parrot Kong switched gender about 4 months ago, went from male to female. I did some research and discovered its not uncommon!

Lucky bug gets a 55 gallon with 6 hides to itself.

Details on the 'switch' here:

You could also try rainbow cichlid. A central but smaller and more 'peaceful'. Mine is the smallest fish in the tank and takes on the acara and chocolate cichlid, lol. Cories are oblivious to aggression. Loaches would be cool, too.

Rejoice!!!!

It's a GIRL!!! The "U" was present with the round tube... now it makes more sense for the nibbles.

AHA...yup, those girl parrots go bonkers. If I'm cleaning either I have to roll mine up in a net or take them out until I finish. Feed Buddy extra during egg time, they spend a lot of energy when laying eggs. My two gals eat nonstop the week leading up to eggs. Once they're ready they stop eating for about 3-4 days. Then I leave them to clean up their eggs (protein). When I had her in the 225, Patch wanted the whole freaking tank to herself...she laid eggs on a rock dead center in the tank. Nobody could swim past without taking body shots.

Well folks, Buddy got some new tank mates and suffice to say, she doesn’t like it.

I picked up a group of South American and Texan cichlids so that the prior owner wouldn’t leave em for dead.

fast forward a few hours and this she beast is trying to run the joint. So far she is not fairing well, busted lip and a few angered tank mates.

Going to see how this battle royal plays out, here are some of the bigger additions.

Love the fish.
Looks like a peacock, rainbow, and two Texas (look like maybe red ones).
I’m not sure what the smallest two are, some dwarf cichlid.
If the Texas aren’t already a pair, they can breed with parrots, so be careful. The Texas may also kill the smaller cichlids as they grow.

I was fearing what they all might be. I need to update the other post so I can get the tank sorted out in quick order.
