I apply the same philosophy when working on my car... but in that case it's way too tempting to just use it all the time :p

I see your point then, your ambient probably fluctuates a lot. I'd want to be over powered too in that case.
Actually this was the first winter that I didn't have any fluctation at all... added in some extra heaters in there and it stablized perfectly... as a matter of fact my water heaters never turn on except when i do water changes... and that usually cause I'm to lazy to match water temp exactly.

For my mega-tank i'm actually going to be over powered as well but thats because i don't want to wait a week for it to heat everytime I empty it... but I have a plan for the heating on that one that SHOULD help to keep the heating cost down on that tank aswell.

Updates:
Heater is severly underpowered at the moment because I need to keep my other holding tank heated as well so I had to split up my 300 watt heaters that I had.

So I am only using a single 300 watt heater at the moment. The room temp in the basement helps keep the tanks warm thus I don't need mega heaters for normal operations. However the tap water was around 54 degrees so to make a 30 degree leap over night (While possible) was not something I am equiped to handle.

Cycle the beast? No need to as the filter media is all intact from the 800 gallon system I replaced and I am simply moving that media in place. Instant cycle.

Sump extention walls are done, need to put in the dividers tomorrow. Then Friday the pond armor gets applied. Saturday the extention gets installed and another cost of pond armor on the seam, then Sunday it's back to normal with the sump.

Be careful with this approach as this is not entirely true.:grinno: You are increasing volume and don't forget that there is a lot of beneficial bacteria everywhere in an established tank. Think substrate and such. Just something to watch out for.

Aborted Soul had trouble with this approach.

He will be fine with the same stock or slightly less(to start with ofcourse you will add more we all know about the gradual stocking method) . The tank looks awesome VLdesign!
