I've established hundreds of tanks over the years this way. The only way you're going to have trouble is if you do one of two things:

1) wash the media thoroughly with hot chlorinated water
2) immediately stock your tank 100%

Rich is smart. I doubt seriously he'd do either.
 
Any chance of getting a pic of the cichlids swimming around in there? You can never fully realize the scale of a monster tank till you see fish in it.

2 Parrot fish
5 Giraffe cichlids
5 pictus cats

Fish waiting in the old sump:
3 Tinfoil barbs
1 Sun cat (4")
1 Tig (12")
2 Pictus cats
1 small common pleco

Nice venustus are you doing a mix of african and sa/ca?
 
Love the giraffes. I bet that is the biggest tank that a pictus cat has ever had to stretch its legs (Mine were always hyperactive) They are gonna be huge. Congrats man is the sump up and running ?
