Building a 1500 Gallon plywood & glass tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'd love to see the cost break down of this project. I just set up a 125g and it cost me a good bit of money. I'd love to know what i'm getting into when I build myself one of these.

Final cost for tank & sump:

Tank:
2x4 12' = $25.00
2x4 10' = $57.00
2x4 8' = $15.00
2x6 8' = $7.00
2x6 10' = $59.50
2x6 12' = $20.00
2x8 12' = $14.00
2x8 10' = $105.00
2x8 8' = 9.00
Treated 4x4 = $13.00
3/4" Plywood sheets 4'x8' = $135.00
5/16" Concrete sheets 4'x4' = $132.00
Construction adhesive = $14.00
Screws = $38.00
Muraitic acid = $5.00
Seam tape = $8.00
Glass = $1750.00
Pond armor (2.5 gallons) = $840.00 (with shipping)
Lights = $100.00
Bulbs = $28.00
Plumbing = $150.00
Bulkheads = $80.00
Caulk = $48.00
Drywall = $52.00
Wood Trim = $30.00

Tax = $ 270.75
Total = $ 4005.25

About twice as expensive as planned, but there were no corners cut on materials. Obvioulsy the glass could have been half as much if I wanted to deal with the green tint and the pond armor was twice as much but after not having any leaks in it I supposed it was worth it.

That's REALLY quite reasonable, all things considered. I figure I spent roughly $1500 setting up my 200gal plywood by the time it was all said and done. Custom Acrylic tanks I build for people tend to run in the $10/gal range, so a 400gl acrylic would be around the same as your cost for a 1500 with a starphire front.

I think that you will be happy with the starphire glass, my LFS has all their saltwater tanks as starphire and it is amazing, almost like there is no glass at all.
