Building a 55g Sump...What's Wrong With It *15 Pix*

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
look any better? Of course, I need to put the pieces in straight in silicone them in. There is just over 1" gap between the bottom and the piece in front of the pump compartment. I need to cut a new filter sock holder, but it will be ~1" above the first wall and ~1" back. I am also going to need to make another drip plate that is 11 1/2" to add onto the 19" one I made, so now there will be 30 1/2" length of bio media and about 15" tall (so 30.5 x 15 x 12 = 5490 cu. in. vs. what it used to be at 3420). I can't wait to buy all that media, lol. Right now, I only have about 30 pot scrubbers.

i guess i'll just have to go for it

At 870 gph? A low head pump is going to lose performance very quicky under pressure. Only a high head pump is suitable for operating under pressure.

Just a FYI. ALL pumps create pressure. Even at zero head, there is still lots of pressure being created. Yes low head pumps will lose flow more quickly as static pressure rises compaired to high head pumps.

What does this have to do with anything I said?

Talking about 1290 gph is irrelevant and only going to add confusion. You can't pump the water out of the sump at 1290 gph. The tank is going to be close to 6 ft, so we should stick to that.

I was using that figure for argumentative sake.. No its not going to add confusion. I was stating that the hyperflow can pump a documented 1290 GPH at 1' head through a 3/4" line UNDER PRESSSURE. Using those to figures I was giving an example that even if you have a pump flowing 800 GPH or 1290 GPH, neither of this flow rates you will get with 1/2" piping.

One inch pipes won't either. On a good day they will only flow 600 gph under gravity.

2 one inch pipes? Well, I believe you should be able to reach a bit higher but I have no factual data to stand behind.

I should be able to lower it some w/o too many problems. like i said, it's temp and I can make it larger in the future but i'm running out of time right now.

i can prob do that w/o spending a whole lot. bigger is better in this case.
running out of time youve spent a few days on here when you could have used that time to make it bigger and right!!!!!!!!!

Well, i took all this week off so now I have time. And I have made it bigger :D

IMO that is a great start to a sump.-good job and post up some more pics when you get everything init. You might want to PM zennzo about some scrubbies, he but alot of them in bulk and is selling them at a desent price to us. I think 10 is costing us 2 bucks.

thanks. I'm in the process of siliconing everything in and I just picked up the parts to do the 1 1/4" overflows. Hopefully tomorrow I will be testing it out. I hope with all the bends in my overflows that they will flow enough. I'm glad I decided to do it right even if I was already tired of messing with it and spending money :D.

i did see that but forgot who was selling them, thanks.

I could have bought an FX5 for cheaper than this sump is costing me, lol

looks good I looked how it started and thaught of alot of what others have said. the new design is alot better than it was. its looking good. you will be alot happier with this than an FX5 in the long run not to mention you can brag how you built it. post it up when it finished and up and running good work

thanks.

I have one more important question right now. For the overflow I'm doing, the T determines the water height in the tank. Do I want to cut the pipe to where I would want the water in the middle of the T or top or bottom or what?
