Building a 9'x25' pond

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Wow that's an amazing find after so long, must had found a warm hole to hibernate in over the winter. Do you thing she'll have any problems on three legs?

I was certainly shocked to see her. Assuming the recovery goes OK she should be fine on 3 legs. She was spoiled before and only ate by hand. I am interested to see how long until she comes around again. I have talked to several other 3 legged turtle owners on another forum and theirs have adapted. I will probably have to keep her dry docked and then quarantined for a few months. Also something to take into mind when I build her outside habitat.

Is it hard to keep the algea from taking over in there?
Ask again in two months when it really warms up :-)

well I ask because my father has a pond in his backyard and im trying to convince him to put some monsters in it. He says the algea build up is to big of a hassle

hey nice to see a fellow virginia beach hobbyist on here!

The pond looks great! Do you have any plans once this Virginian weather stops being crazy and warms up?

As for your Heron troubles, they are supposedly quite territorial. Each have a few ponds or watering holes within their territory. They won't come to a pond that has another resident heron. So this is one animal where a convincing statue can work to ward them off.

I honestly don't know enough yet to give a good answer. If he has no algae problems now I wouldn't think it would change too much. I didn't fill mine until mid summer. So far its been up and down. I only have partial sun and 64w of UV on it. Once the temps rise and there is a substantial bio load things may change.

Thanks, There are at least 3 of us now!

Quick update. Over the weekend I cleaned out the upper pond and routed the BD pump to it. Last year I just had an extra pump running to it, I really like the extra flow this year. Makes a much cleaner cascade and does not break up at all before hitting the pond surface. I also finally put up some scaffolding and painted the fence along the pond. Will be time to start planting soon.

Less flow through the TT now but still enough for an even dispersion.

Also brought home the surgery patient, I will feel better in a few weeks when she is more recovered.

i have been following your pond build since i first got on mfk, i am planning to redo my outdoor ponds and i decided to make a bench up on my deck that is tied into my pond, kind of like your upper pond, only it will overflow through pvc underground instead of cascading since it will be 40 feet from the pond. thank you for the great idea.
