Came home and noticed my african butterflyfish was nowhere to be found until I looked down and say him all dried up :( definitely a crappy loss cuz iv had him a while and he ate flake food, so would u guys recommend any other replacement? Any other fish that stay towards the top, can't be to big but definitely not small, tank mates are 2 firemouths. Sengal bichir, zig zag eel, and a few synodontis

How about another butterflyfish....after you've made sure that it can't easily jump out.

Thought about it but was thinking something different, plus I don't wanna buy crickets to feed them because thats what my LFS feeds theirs, my tank is sealed the only way he could of jumped out was wen I was feeding and I didn't notice

Bummer - I love my butterflies. They are pretty aggressive feeders though, and will go crazy at feeding time. I could see how it could happen - too bad you didn't notice in time. Mine eat prepared foods easily - pellets and flakes.

My other suggestion for top dwelling fish would be hatchetfish. They like buddies though, so you'd want to get a group of them. They can also jump, so you'll need to be careful, but maybe less likely than a butterfly, as long as they feel secure. They (and the butterflies) like floating plants, too.

I thought about hatchets, been wanting to keep them for a whIle but I feel as though my bichir would eventually get to them, he's already eaten clown loaches and attempted to eat a banjo cat

Maybe a rocket gar or 2? But would they bother my eel that's about 3 and a half inches? And wat would they eat

LFS doesn't sell those so they'd be either harder to find or more expensive to obtain

How about red tail chalseus. They swim on the top only, but it's a good jumper too. You can keep one, or a group, never two as they can be aggressive towards its own kind. It's a beautiful fish but can reach 10 inch.

Love the chalceus idea! I picked up a rocket gar and some type of top water gar looking kili fish I can't remember the name of, I'm gonna see how that goes. The gar isn't all that appealing to me now that I have it due to it being small and plain but the killi is cool
