Ca cichlid Agression

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yes that is the general idea, they might catch a swordtail slacking once in a while but usually won't bother them, as long as they aren't starving. Were you having aggression issues when it was just the Salvini and JD in the tank?
Occasionally, jack was the clear instigator and more dominant until the sal found a cave he liked, now the sal is content to keep to his lair while the jack is content to chase the cons around leaving the sal alone. Would 2 female cons work with this setup

I don't think the stock will last long term, both being males at some point one will kill the other and have the tank to themselves,

It's possible that the female cons will help distract the JD from the salvini, at the end of the day doing a community of CA cichlids in a 75, chasing/aggression is probably going to be unavoidable. JD's usually are not too bad but every fish is different. You could try the female cons and add some swordtails as well, see if that helps.

+1 salvini can be ruthless as they mature.
75's are better suited to fish like thorichthys or rainbows or some of the smaller cryptoheros species.
There are also many south American cichlids that would cohabit better together in a 75.

I don't know why but I just don't like jacks... the end result is fairly boring to my eyes. A mean greenish blue fish that is outclassed in both presentation and presence by other South Americans (green terrors). It is all in the eyes of the keeper, just keep an eye on them. I don't think either will be able to one shot the other overnight, but if one becomes weaker and starts to look abused it is time to make a decision.

I guess my thing with Jack's is that left alone they are content my last one housed with a Green Terror (Aequidens rivulatus) was the dominant fish however when the terror submitted the jack would let him be untill further challenged seemed like a good peace keeper but my curent Jack is full of piss and vinegar and still relatively small 4"+ - an eighth an inch. Was hoping for the same temperament but clearly not fulfilling my expectations on that part

Do you suppose it could last a year given how young and juvinile they are? I'm in a rental now that is to small for another aquarium I just sold my house in WY and am in limbo mode currently
