Can cichlids teach us anything about domestic violence?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
In which way as far as I know abusers use violence as a way of exerting control due to insecurities. Cichlids use it for diplay purposes driven by instinct to obtain a mate and I said there is NO correlation. So how is that confusing or loosely based. You just confused me. Do you think I'm defending domestic violence. My post said I find it disgusting. So I'm not sure what you mean by your statement.

Also I'm not sure about your interpertation of the video being correct. Clownfish do have a symbiotic relationship with anenome's. Though in this video I think that scrap maybe being saved for later in what the clown know's is a safe place. The clown has a slime coat that the anenome doesn't recognize as a potential threat or food source. So the clown benefits by being protected from other fish by the anenome's stingers and the anenome gets a significant food source in the form of scraps. Though I thought their symbiotic relationship was common knowledge. It is a amazing evolutionary adaptation though.

the first post was a loosely based theory.

Your post made me think that a) im not a fish, b) im dont create domestic violence...so there is no solid way for me to know if they both THINK the same...but you made me think of maybe they do? because the ones who resort to violence ARE the ones who are more primitave, in most cases.

And, i would never suggest someone such as yourself (koltsix) to be promoting or defending abuse, it was just the way you worded your argument that sparked something in my head.

Okay I was totally confused, by your statement. Though I find the act of violence a primitive reaction often times it's the result of complex emotions in people. We function by nature on a higher level, some of us just don't act it. I actually feel blaming instinct is a crutch a way of not taking responsibility for one's actions. Many guilty people do it because it's a way of shifting blame. Take murder it's a very primitive act yet the motive's for it are usually complex. Serial Killers and the like don't act out of instinct, but usually complex interpertations of events in their lives that they incorporate into a warped broken psyche. Don't believe me just watch Dexter. Lol!!

I do believe your right in most cases atleast.

and, back to what i said, it seems to be a loosely based correlation.

It'd be like me suggesting that MFK is blue, because water is blue, and because we like fish we probably also like water, which is blue, so we probably do like blue, so we'll like the look of MFK and want to stay here.

Now this could be true, but there are those underlying causes that make us come back :P

At one point, much of our world consisted of matriarchal societies. (matriarchal means led by females)

There are many animal species that are matriarchal in nature.

There is a lot of violence in the animal kingdom when it comes to mating. But for all the violence, there are probably as many animal species that have very intricate and complex and non-violent courtship rituals.

The violence and controlling factors in domestic violence have nothing to do with the passing of the most desirable survival-of-the-fittest genes.

I like intelligent conversations like this bro. Though I still stick by my guns. Though scientists aren't fish they do try to base theories on general observations and logical deductive reasoning. It's a common theory that some animals use combat with their intended mates as a way of showing their superior gentetic make-up. This way only the physically superior specimens mate so the species continues to grow genetically and evolve and hone beneficial characteristics. In nature it's assumed by scientists that pyhsical superiority is beneficial to a species continual survival. It's also assumed by scientists that cichlids do behave in aggressive manner during mating as a way of courtship proving their genetic viability and their worth as a potential mate. Just like psychology has generalized opinions as to why poeple behave the way they do. It's through deductive reasoning, observation that these people who spend their lives studying their field come up with theories. I based my statements on scientific theories so it's not loosely based. Many people far more educated than me came up with these theories. I don't think the scientific community as whole made loosely based theories do you? Though you are correct nothing is absolute in the realm of science. It's been said when you say something is possible your almost always right, and when you say something is impossible your almost always wrong. Also as you said I'm no fish or abuser so I can't say for sure. Just offer what science has come up with so far in our learning process.

Good point Chaitika I was so focused on my original point I overlooked that point as well. It is true there are many species that use display of physical characteristics as a way to court potential mates. Peacocks being one of the more prominent examples. Many birds also build intricate nest's as a way of attracting mates, flexing their brain power I guess.

Good points, all!

I don't notice any strong emotion in my previous post and apologize that it seemed that way. Try reading it in a "Master Splinter" voice; that's how I was thinking when I typed it. :D

While physical aggression toward one's mate is (according to my moral code) wrong for humans, I see the reasoning behind wild animals displaying their strength. You wouldn't want weak animals propagating like mad and weakening the species.

As for broken psyches, ride the 150 Metro bus at night from Kent station to downtown Seattle. I've heard girls openly discuss their preference for a man who can "Pin me down and kick some *butt*." Don't believe me? Look around at a big brew-ha-ha sometime and you'll notice that plenty of guys who have done jail time for violent crimes have girls hanging off them while polite guys usually don't. And, yeah, it might stem from distorted cultural standards and sad upbringing, but there you'll see it - female humans who prefer violent men, abusive or otherwise.

Just throwing that out there.
