Can cichlids teach us anything about domestic violence?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think that also stems from The original ideals inbuilt for survival ie need the strongest male I can attract to protect me and our offspring to provide food and shelter, I don't think these basic insitncts can ever really be breed out, though saying that we are now smarter so 90% of us rely more on our brains now
But on the same point each female is attracted to different mating attributes so as to protect the species as a whole
But back to the original poster I don't think we can learn anything from the I think we are way more developed and evolved we are so far beyond there primitive and basic relationships in which violence is required we have no need for it (of course bar a few exceptions such as the girls on the metro bus) there is a reason violence is frowned upon in our society and there is no excuse for it

As for broken psyches, ride the 150 Metro bus at night from Kent station to downtown Seattle. I've heard girls openly discuss their preference for a man who can "Pin me down and kick some *butt*." Don't believe me? Look around at a big brew-ha-ha sometime and you'll notice that plenty of guys who have done jail time for violent crimes have girls hanging off them while polite guys usually don't. And, yeah, it might stem from distorted cultural standards and sad upbringing, but there you'll see it - female humans who prefer violent men, abusive or otherwise.

Just throwing that out there.

Actually there were several studies done about what women look for based on their cycles. They are attracted to rougher guys when ovulating and gentler looking guys when not. The theory is that this is a throw back to our evolution as a hunter gatherer society. That doesn't mean abusive just rough looking. But most violent men are rough looking. So in part it speaks to that.

There are of course there are dady issue girls but that's a result of higher functioning that fish don't have. This is where most biker babies (that don't' ride themselves) and felon lover come from.

domestic violence would be a maladaptive evolutionary behavior. A beaten female if more likely to get eaten by predators. Less effective at spotting food with a swollen eye. The obvious danger of a miscarriage. Also injuries that can easily be healed now would have proven deceidely fatal or at least crippling for most of our history. the idea of "keepin the ***** quiet" while hunting fails for two reasons. First if they are too stupid to keep quiet in a dangerous situation they tend to die out pretty fast. Second is that the saber tooth tiger can hear you "teachin her".

I think there are deeper instincts involved, and the deeper you look the more primitive and animalistic it is. It is well known that some abused women will turn on the person that tries to defend them. They keep going back and enabling the abuser, keeping the cycle going. There has to be a genetic underlying instinct at play here, because some of these women have the means to leave, yet they excuse and forgive regular violent physical abuse. Deep down maybe these women see the violence as a good thing as it presumably a sign that the male will have the werewithall to fend off attackers and predators. Cichlid females test their potential mates for fighting skills and power. Maybe women do it in some way too. After all, we do share the base survival instincts with all living creatures.

Im very glad you brought that up. That factor was brought up as an explanation as to why women have started to find less masculine men attractive in the last 40 or so years, since widespread use of birth control began. Birth control stops the natural cycle, so women on the pill never get the craving for a rougher, more masculine man. So the whole cultural standard shifted towards the softer more feminine male image and the metrosexual.

Metro-sexual isn't new and the attractiveness of softer features isn't either. Dandies are one of the later examples of this phenomenon. Also in may ancient cultures that did not have birth control had similar things due to status being equated with a gentler appearance; not having to work the fields. In China to this day the long nails (particularly the pinky) are a sign of status. Many Chinese engineers sport the ubiquitous coke finger which has resulted in many awkward conversations

The whole cultural shift is more likely due to the level of safety women now experince. We've wiped out anything that can kill us other than each other. Many inner city girls still go for the hard corp gang banger even when on birth control. That can be seen in many more dangerous areas even when birth control is plentiful. Also there are more and more non hormonal options with little change in feminization of the male standard of beauty.

very interesting read. many good points and a very good tone! I'm impressed!

I'm not even gonna go with the cichlid thingie since I really can't put myself in that situation..

I'll just try to contribute to this great thread by staying out of it.. I just lost my entire english vocabulary and would come across as retarded if I tried to type anything at all right now.. I do however have plenty of opinions on this matter and will come back to the thread.. (yes, I know you don't care but this is more of a reminder to myself since I tend to forget things)..

True, pretty boys always existed, but this report looked at male movie stars and sex symbols. We've gone from John Wayne and Robert Michum types to Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt for example. Theres no doubt that the pill has altered women's hormonal patterns significantly. It affects their pheromone receptors as well, so a man they fall in love with while off the pill wont be the same man to them when theyre on. Ive experienced this phenomenon several times myself.
