This is the point that’s trying to be made when the word uneducated is used, feeders are not good for the long term health of your fish. They are generally low in nutritional value and could introduce unwanted pathogens. The best way to use feeders if you insist on it is to raise your own, as your fish grows the size of the feeders also increase so you can see fry isn’t going to be suitable for an 11” male Mota that means grow out tanks for guppies then platys, swordtails (not goldfish) ect it becomes a big pain and actually much more work then the main display fish because now you’re breeding and raising platys. The other option is to buy them, now they must be quarantined and treated for parasites also requiring additional tanks and cost to be done correctly. Of course you could buy frozen fish, a good option but no chase and kill! So very basically there it is in a nut shell. And remember not all the fish that have been suggested are strictly piscivores, so depending on what you pick a diet of feeders could be especially detrimental. We really are trying to help you create the best environment for your fish, all that’s left for you is to take the advice you’re being given and make the best decision possible for the long term health and wellbeing of your fish. I know it’s not as exciting watching a good size cichlid unloading on a group of pellets but you could use Krill, shrimp, earthworms or crickets as supplements once or twice a week. (read the “Long Stringy Poop” thread if you haven’t already). Decide on a fish you like and then research it thoroughly before you buy it. Good Luck.

^ Agree with that in terms of the feeder issue and breeding your own.

I keep piranhas and they don't even get feeders unless it's a special occasion because it's too costly and the fish store feeders just aren't safe.

There are plenty of fish with teeth that eat other fish though, outside of the cichlid category. In fact I'm pretty sure you could go into any specific section of this forum and find something that fits your qualifications. Example: Knife fish love live food and alot of people have issues when buying knifes that they were raised on live food. They also have teeth.. and there are many different kinds of knife fish of varying sizes.

Just do your research and find something YOU like.

yeah, lowcel should have said it in a different way, but what he was trying to get across was how aquanero put very well, feeder gold fish especially have almost no nutritional value being mainly fat and most carry parasites due to the poor conditions they have been kept in. if you really want to do feeders, then use something like guppies or platys and it should only be a supplement to a main diet of pellets, and they should be quarantined and treated for parasites. also i dont use feeder fish, i use insects and IMO its just as interesting to watch if thats what your going for, and you dont have to worry about them transferring anything to your fish. frozen foods, worms, mealworms, crickets, and the random grasshopper i catch outside is what my fish get but this is only a few times a week to supplement their pellet diet
