C'mon, there must be SOMETHING that can live with a Jardini

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think you stand a better chance, your starting yours in a large tank to start. As everyone has said though it'll be trial and error.

I ended trading in my Jardini, too. I hated letting him go as he was a nice fish but 1 fish in a 200g was not to my liking. He seemed okay with my rays in the 320 but I ended up getting a HBRTG to replace him with so he had to go in the 200. He killed a silver dollar that was in the tank, so he ended up being on his own. The 200 is 6' x 2' so it wasn't big enough for a ray.

I'm a nub and so far my Jar's are fine though he bit them at first..... I took him out a few times, brought him back in, and eventually he got better. Keyword: be creative! Block his path from biting, add some fish that'll fend for themselves without killing him, etc. Mines is at about 6" though I heard at 10" they'll go crazy. I have him with two silvers now, and they look great.

Mine's about only 5". Ours are both too small to go serial killer yet.

I always thought that a jar might work with a ray. The rays have such low profile and the jars are at the top, idk it might work. Good luck

My tank is too small for a ray.

try RTC most of the stories i heard of jar with tankmates are RTCs,

and yeah try something that stay in the bottom.

Unfortunately it's too small for a RTC too.

u can try my wife???

What makes you think I haven't tried her already? lol j/k

how big is your jar now? or have you not purchased one yet? im currently keeping my jar 6in ish with a bunch of other fishes and they are living fine

I already bought it and it's only 5". From everything I've read, they don't turn tankmate crazy till the get a little bigger.

In the end, it depends on the individual fish. Most stories you hear say that jars will kill anything in the tank once they get to a certain size. I wouldn't say that is a true statement.

I would try keeping a fish or fishes that are already larger in size than the jar. Not just bigger than food size, as big or bigger than the jar- give the fish the best chance to fend off or fight back if the jar gets aggressive. Bottom dwellers aren't a sure thing to live either.

Your tank is large enough to handle this. There should be plenty of room if they start picking out territories.

Thanks for the sound advice.

I'm actually looking forward to the trial and error part of all this. I've always been a cichlid keeper so I'm going into new territory. It's in my 156 for now because a 5" Jardini would be an awfully expensive Jaguar snack in my 265 lol.

I hope I don't suffer the same consequences. Thanks for the post.

I keep mine with a Pleco, a Raphael Stripped and a Steatocranus Afer ( Arowana Knife ), without any problem.

I keep my 35cm jar with a 25cm Sooty Grunter (One of the most aggresive australian fish) a 20cm Snakehead gudgeon, 15cm Spangled gudgeon,2 medium plec and 3 Aussie Bullrout. They had a bit of a bicker when i put the sooty in and my jar was attacking him but i changed the tank around so it all new terrotory and they were fine, got more driftwood to put in the tank so they have hidy spots.

Thanks Miguel and Cammo,

So it sounds like it can be done but still depending on the individual Jardini's level of aggression. Was it always a no problem situation or did you guys go thru a trial and error period to get your compatible combinations?

Can a Jardini even take out tough Cichlids like Grammodes and Jags?

Nevermind, I just spent some time reading through the "Tankmates with JARDINI (READ!!!!)" thread and to me it's confirms the answer you guys said. Bottom line, trial and error, no other way to know. Thanks everyone.

I just put a shovelnose catfish in with my jardini yesterday.I found that at night the SNCF would not just stay on the bottom as some would think. My jardini didn't seem to pay him no mind. The next day however,my SNCF was hiding behind some plants for quite some time.I wanted show a friend my new Catfish so I pulled some of the plant back so my buddy could take a look.Once I did I noticed that the SNCF had some shredded top fin.So hopefully that was the last of it.I have african frogs in there that my Jardini gets along fine with. Not at first though. He took a couple of bites at of them when I first put them in.It didn't hurt them though, aparently their skin is a lot tougher than a fishes scales. My Jar has also taken bites at a couple of my little bristle nose.Their still around same as the frogs.

I had good luck with my combo in my Avatar---But unfortunately-Some bad water ended up killing the both-But for time they were together-things were working out great-
The jar owned the top of the tank-And the dovii owned the bottom of it....
Fighting at first-Nothing major-Settled right down after they figured out neither was going anywhere

man since the jar is only 5inches just keep him with a bunch of other fishes the same size as him this is so the other fishes cant fit in his mouth and maybe if they grow old together they'll learn to be kind towards each other HAHA thats what im hoping for. also i keep my jar full so he doesnt turn super sayen and destory the other fishes. ive keep my jar alone with a blood pariot and they made friends like 1 on 1 in a tank but when i tried to keep a convict with him he destory that fish and the fish was bgiger then him. then i moved the jar to the bigger tank with everyone else and hes living fine there. only aggression is sometimes between the jd's. hope it works for you man
