Not mine but my friend. Can fire eel morph their colour late stage? I know certain catfish can morph from normal to leucistic or xanthic. But this eel morph from normal to xanthic and back to normal. Can anyone explain why???

Im tempted to say its stressed to the point it got lighter in color, but dont think they could get that light...

Will be following to see what the experts have to say...

Never seen one get that light when stressed, although, that is kind of what it looks like. They definitely can lighten and darken their colors based on their stress level and surroundings.

It could just be a special fire eel that is capable of changing its color more than others can. However, it could be that there is something quite wrong with this eel.

Sometimes genes will randomly activate, causing changes in an animal
It's not always clear why such genes activate, but it usually appears at random.

If only it was mine, I could provided more details.

I saw one of them come into my lfs recently. What's on the bottom right of the second photo??View attachment 1317269

For an animal to morph their color ONE time, I've heard plenty. But to morph back to original color after the first change, that's a first.
