I would just like to say I have seen a giant gourami bigger then two feet.
ron greteman of the colony, TX has a albino one that is 2 1/2 feet long.

ron's isn't albino. it's leucistic....eye's aren't red

Great facts..

I think i'll just add that Oscars' aggression varies on the fish.. I have 2 large 8" oscars that aren't aggressive.. and i HAD a 2" albino oscar that was VERY aggressive.. he kept picking on my arowana.. in the end.. he died because he was trapped between the temperature heating tube.. pure chance..

I might also add.. FLOWERHORNS!
this fishing are FREAKING AGGRESSIVE!!! BE WARNED.. they act very much like peranas they will kill ANYTHING that is smaller than they are.. EVEN KILL THEIR OWN KIND.. very aggressive fish.. bad with any fish except for Oscars..

A MUST NO WITH AROWANA! (OK with jack dempsey)

Oh yeah, these petstore flowerhorns are prretty aggressive and not suited for community tank, any kind.

Saber tooth characins= more common big fish but very senstive to the poor water quality.

guys, thought the deal was commmon aquarium fish. A bunch of the fish being thrown out there aren't exactly "common." My idea of common is to walk into 5 pet stores and three of the stores will have the fish in question.
For an article, even a small book about this subject, I would maybe focus on a species and then list "similar fish to avoid:" for example the oscar is a blah blah blah blah blah. (Whole paragraph on why it is inappropriate for the beginner). Similar species to aviod would be the jaguar cichlid, red devil ... whatever. Just a thought.

But they are common in some areas, just not in ALL LFS at different times of the year.

this is a very good point, and part of the idea of something like "fish to avoid" should be focused towards beginners, and some of the fish listed are not widely available to most beginners, or too expensive for most beginners, who will normally not spent more than even 20 dollars on just one fish.

Stuff like oscars, tinfoil barbs, channel cats, and plecos were mentioned and are defnitely near the top of the list.

Actually all species that mentioned, are more common depends in what pet store or online you shopping at and at different times in year. And i dont think price will stop some newbies as there are different AGES of newbies. You can have 20 years old newbie whos new to the fishkeeping.
