Actually all species that mentioned, are more common depends in what pet store or online you shopping at and at different times in year. And i dont think price will stop some newbies as there are different AGES of newbies. You can have 20 years old newbie whos new to the fishkeeping.

I've worked at a couple of pet stores, and for me a newbie is someone who stops at petco (for example) and buys a tank and then soon wants some fish for it. I've seen the majority of people that are starting up (esp. middle-aged folks) will say $15 is too much for a single fish.

Common fish to me are not seasonal or regional or even expensive. I've been keeping fish for 16 plus years and worked a several stores and have not run into some of the fish that are being mentioned. I believe the intent of the article, if it is still being written, is to educate on EASILY obtainalbe fish. Also, not to scare away the "newbies" but to educate them.

Really any species of gar should be on there, as most people, esp newbies, view a 55 as a large tank, which isn't wide enough. You could add Asian RTCs to the list, as they are easy to buy, at least by me. Also, Venezula pike are real common and get large... and although leporinus don't get huge (less than a foot), I doubt most people realize the potential size when purchased.

Price isnt issue..otherwise they cant afford tank, gravel, food, kits, etc. Sorry but price doesnt matter as its varied in different LFS.

Just because you work several stores, doesnt mean you work ALL stores in whole United States. What's species that dont seems common to you? All species I mentioned are common in Minnesota LFS.

Prices means nothing to some newbies.

Anyways, all species that I mentioned are far common, they may not be in Petco, Walmart and Petsmart but in pa and ma's LFS too. And price on these fish can varied from different lfs to another lfs.

kribs aint that much problematic for other fish keepers and they are semi-aggressive. But jewels and convicts are worse than kribs.
