Price isnt issue..otherwise they cant afford tank, gravel, food, kits, etc. Sorry but price doesnt matter as its varied in different LFS.

For a vast number it is, not so much about affordability, but rather that most people starting up in fishkeeping still consider $20 "too much for a fish" for the most part. About the stores, places like Walmart, Petco, etc. is where the vast majority of newbies get their fish, most don't start by going to the mom and pop place.

i dont know who im agreeing with but...

if it makes any sense ive seen 10-15year olds often go in to a fish store and go wow thats a cool fish while looking at black ghost knives. And even though they are $20 that kid always says hes going to save p for it and surely enough eventualy he took the fish fr his 20g...price has nothing to do with what newbies would or would not get. There also many times where someone wants fish for there new tank they start picking things out and of course...they cant leave with out a pleco "here mam these dont get too big and would be great for ur tank" (about rubberlips and bristlenose) newb "oh no $8 for a pleco is to much ill take that one *points at 1.99 common*" Newbs dont have to pay high pices to get fish that arent good for new fish keepers.

To the OP, why do you post this in a site called Monsterfishkeepers???Maybe it would be good to post it in aquariacentral instead.

Because the fish I posted are very much monster fish. We may be monster fish keepers, but we should also be responsible fish keepers.;)

Really any species of gar should be on there, as most people, esp newbies, view a 55 as a large tank, which isn't wide enough. You could add Asian RTCs to the list, as they are easy to buy, at least by me. Also, Venezula pike are real common and get large... and although leporinus don't get huge (less than a foot), I doubt most people realize the potential size when purchased.

Some of those are good. Gars are a big problem.

Great article. I'm very glad to see Oscars on there. This needs to be posted in giant letters at WalMart and PetsMart.

LOL, I'm sure that would help. Thanks.

Also, to the rest of you guys, could you keep the arguing to a minimum?
I'd prefer to keep this open.

Yeah, I wasn't originally going to put the part about the rays, but I thought it would be helpful. I'll add the part about oscars.

No problem. Thanks for reading.
i think this is excellently written and a very important disscussion ... good job!

I went to a mom and pop store... looking for a fish that would be a great addition to my 120. The owner suggested an arowana. I had no idea about the fish and the massive size it would become. He pairs well with my various cichlids, however I feel I may be going up in tank size sooner than anticipated. I paid $75 for an 8 inch fish. Is that too high. Would anyone know how quicking he will grow out of my tank?

$75 isn't a great price, but not too bad. He should be okay for maybe a year, a year and a half. I can't believe this thread actually helped you!
Thanks for reading!

To any mods, what does a thread have to do to be stickied? I was just wondering, I think this thread would help a bunch of people.

I know I read something like " MFK where members inspire members ", and that is what i like with mfk that we are a tolerant and a very much inspiring community. So I am a little sad to see that theres so many people thinking its a good idea to advice beginners on what they cant keep!

This thread is just an evidence of that we REALLY need a species list, with all necessary info on every imaginable monsterfish! In that way we can educate in an positive and INSPIRING way.

I am not really advising people to not keep them. I suppose the title is a bit misleading.
It should be something like: "Common Freshwater Fish To Be Wary Of".
I apologize if you misunderstood my reasoning.

I know that you have good intentions and I certainly agree on that it is important to teach people on proper ways to keep certain fish, but I feel this is the wrong way.

Maybe if this thread could be a stickie in a species list section.
