well you should do your research first and then pick but red-bellies are the best for starters

I don't really get the logic on why red bellies should be a starter piranha. I jumped right into carbre keeping without a problem and barely any fish keeping experience... are they that different?

Keeping them just to show off what your fish can do to a feeder fish or how quick it distorys whatever you put in isn't a good reason to keep them. A large part of why I didn't get rid of mine is because I didn't want them abused like that.

Besides feeding time piranha don't really do that much compared to other types of fish. They are incredibly shy and sometimes when I sit out by the tank all the fish do is snap their jaws and watch me from a distance. If I move closer they know they have to behave. Comparing that to the loach that stuck his head in the snail shell and ran into the glass... big difference on comedy level. Plus the injury count is always a bit irritating, its rare that everyone looks pretty at the same time. And there is the hit and miss of getting other types of fish to live with them which could suck if your only keeping a single tank.

I'm not trying to discourage you by any means if its what you want. What else have you been looking at?

I think that's because rbps are much cheaper and much easier to obtain as compare to caribes.

right, they could last 10-15 years if well taken care of, maybe even longer

yeah. ive decided to try rbp. im getting a 29 gal and putting 3 or 4 in there (1") so ill let u guys know how that works out

The general rule is 20 gallons per Red Belly so I think one would be the max to fit in there. In keeping two, one would end up being the Top dog and the agressor and possibly bully the other to death. So either a single in a 29 gal or something like 3-4 in a 75 gal at the very least for a shoal. Also I would stay away from feeding feeder fish if you were planning to. If you must feed live feed danios or tetras because they lack the Thiaminase that gold fish feeders contain which can cause a deficiency of B vitamin in your fish as well as there being lots of diseases associated with goldfish feeders such as ich or parasites. I would recommend hikari cichlid gold or hikari massivore as far as pellets go along with lots of white fish fillets, even scallops or shimp and then maybe the occasional treat of a danio or tetra. A varied diet will make for healthy, happy, and good looking RBPs. Good luck! :headbang2

ummm, you have a bigger tank? 3-4 in 29 gallon won't work. Starting at an inch, they should hit 6 inches by 8-10 months. I suggest you have a plan in place if you're going to start with such a small tank

Otherwise get exodons, 3 inches of pure terror.

I agree here exodons would thrive in a 29 gal. You could also maybe keep a single Sanchezi.
Edit: Gah arrow beat me to the punch! Hahaha

it's amazing how exodons get overlooked but they're really a great solution to those who want piranhas but don't have a large enough tank.

They're everything people THINK piranhas are
