Your sand sounds fine. Have you read those links yet?

Hate to say this but I despise overflows. Eventually they will do just that... all over your floor.

thats a scary thought!!! anyone else agree

Its true.. but i have crappy plumbing on my tank. Lost power 4 times in the last 5-6 months and overflowed twice. But like i said im not the best of a plumber and i did everything myself.
If you spend the money and get the right equiptment and not do it yourself like i did, then you should be good

well if i lose my power only water in the box and hoses will end up back in the sump and there is room room for that..was ur sump full before the power loss

Just be sure the box & everything connected, never clogs or leaks.

My advice to convert your tank from fw to sw is this.

Remove all the stuff you don't want to kill, leave the rest. Then take a hand mixer and measure out 1.5 lb of salt for each 5g of water you will have in this tank and get mixing. Convert that puppy over, then pack on that new equipement and do the needed testing and wc till you get the readings good and then throw in a couple of cheap test pilots like some chromis and in a month or so your tank should be good to start. Depends how long the bacteria takes to set up with your new tank, but I have converted a fw to sw in this way, though I kept the same filters and stuff more than a few wc in the process though. I still have the fish I did this to in my 180g tank right now 2 years later.

I have an built in overflow. So i had diy instal a tube that runs from the drain up to the safe level of water that could drain out with out overflowing my sump. and i cut it to short. and i had to drain the entire tank to install this and i cut it to short on accident. So i lower the water in the sump so it doesnt overflow that much when power goes out

You can probably keep that layer of play sand in there. I can't see a problem with it. Also, I would keep your fx5 and use that for mechanical filtration, and then use your sump purely for bio/refugium, and to hide your equipment.
