When I got back in the hobby 3 or so years ago i got a pair to breed feeders.

They ended up as population control in a 55gal Plattys tank.
I then got some Honduran Red Points and kept them for a year in a community 55gal.

Had to emergency rehomed them due to blow tank seam. Got some more HRPs when I got another tank.

I love them, so much caracter in a small package that doesn't need thousands of dollars of equipment to keep.

The only thing I've observed that might resemble hate, is certain prejudice against the owners of cichlids who are difficult to kill under bad conditions and easy to breed at the same time. Like convicts or Mbuna. The idiots in the scene tend keep the more hardy type of cichlids because they tolerate too small tanks, bad conditions, less water changes etc. And that can ruin the reputation of certain fishes.

In the end it matters what fish you like to keep. You are the one who will see them every day. Not some guy who hates them.
As long as you can provide the right conditions go for convicts. They show a lot of interesting behaviour and given enough time they can grow quite big and even develop a hump like this one.

Those Cons are bad *** to bad they are overcrowded into a corner of the tank.....?

Convicts got me here. I had my first pair in about 6th grade. I still remember paying $6 to get the male out of the display tank with everyone else 3+ times his size- old and faded grey with a hump and streamers all over his tail. I’ve bred probably 15 species of cichlids since then, but convicts have remained one of my favorites. 7CC7AD09-E3B7-4FC6-A8EF-418B941ED7D7.jpeg

Love the humpy head on that guy!
I’ve been keeping fish for more of my life then not and can say I’ve never seen a kok on a con like that. Lol
No con hate on MFK, at least I’ve not seen any.
I would say besides maybe oscars, convicts are responsible for creating the most cichlid lovers.
With out a doubt convicts a responsible for getting more people into breeding fish then any other.
Well close, beside guppy’s and other live bearers, I’d say convicts are next.
