Convict Hate

Just found the old post. He claims 9 inches.

I've never seen a convict close to that size, would be cool to see.
Here we only have multigenerational inbred stunted ones in a bottom tank in the back corner of the LFS. Anything bigger than 3 or 4 inches would be considered a monster.
I still like them though, wouldn't mind a pair in a small tank that's been set up nicely. They'd be cool for me and my kid would get a good biology lesson watching them breed and go about their business.

Unfortunately that is the case for a lot of convicts in the hobby. I’m growing out a pair of pink cons right now from the Lfs. Hopefully they aren’t inbred or stunted even though the chances that they are may be high. Over a year ago I got a couple pink males from lfs that I had to rehome because of my situation at the time but they put on lots of size in a matter of months and were already 4 inches with small nuchal humps granted I bought them at around 2.5 inches Surely those males would have gotten to 6 inches at some point and the Nuchal humps had potential to be a lot bigger too.

My current male is a little over 4” and has a hump starting. Hes paired up with a very young and small female so hopefully I will have fry soon. I have high hopes for him. Hes a tough sob. He used to live in my 150 with 2 jags, 1 Texas and a JD. They all had 2” or more on him in size and he held his own no problem. I only moved him so he could be with the female. Shes way to small to go in with the fish in the 150.
You can see his hump in these pics and how small the female is.

I think the problem Is they breed and the owners take the babies into the shop and they just get chucked into a tank and sit there forever. They are cheap but even the shop staff try to discourage you from buying them.

It would here, it would be very rare to see in a LFS at least. I've got a 40cm cube tank here, this thread has made me think of taking a poor stunted pair and giving them a nice life. Might be a bit small but it might work and will be better than sitting in a forgotten order of the LFS for their whole lives.

Lol well it's good to know that my (lokir) is a monster convict then. Got him about 4 years ago at ¼in for ¢.25, he has been thru so much abuse and is still goin strong. Lol he's eventually goin home with a buddy of mine that wants a tough as nails fish that will breed easily so he's got something to teach the kids about the circle of life.

It's crazy you can get one for $0.25. The cheapest I've seen them here is $5AUD which is probably the cheapest cichlid available.
I'm thinking the same thing as your mate. A pair in the cube tank will be cool for my daughter to watch their antics.

They honestly are great cichlids as long as ya can manage their aggression levels. Lol only reason I got him so cheap was someone brought in a bunch a babies to the lfs and didn't know what they were so they just sold em for $0.25 a piece just to get rid of em. I originally got 2 but lokir ate his sibling. Bonus points for anyone that guesses where lokir got his name from lol.

Well T TorredCHC , I hope this clears things up.
Convicts may be unappreciated, too common and under rated but they don't seem to be hated.
You should get one and see what you think.
