Convict Hate

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I personally love convicts. I keep many different types and have them in pretty much every tank I have outside of anything that has flowerhorn in it. They definitely help keeping tanks clean grabbing up any extra food that hits bottom. I don't put a pair in a community tank though. They pair up and all hell breaks loose. Had half a 125 held hostage by 2 little 3" convicts. Seeing 8" Carpintis stopping at an invisible line was kind of comical though. That problem got solved quickly and avoided since.

The only thing I've observed that might resemble hate, is certain prejudice against the owners of cichlids who are difficult to kill under bad conditions and easy to breed at the same time. Like convicts or Mbuna. The idiots in the scene tend keep the more hardy type of cichlids because they tolerate too small tanks, bad conditions, less water changes etc. And that can ruin the reputation of certain fishes.

In the end it matters what fish you like to keep. You are the one who will see them every day. Not some guy who hates them.
As long as you can provide the right conditions go for convicts. They show a lot of interesting behaviour and given enough time they can grow quite big and even develop a hump like this one.

Wow those are some cranky Cons, lol...all piled up together though, so no wonder.

I have convicts in my pond with HUGE fish....they do really well and breed easily. They're not the best looking fish....... but they are easy to keep. I guess they are kinda like Damsels in the marine world...... fine fish...but they mess with other usually more expensive fish.

I've posted other threads on MFK about some blue finned cons I recently got, so ome of you may have already seen the photos.
After a long time of keeping many rare, wild, and stunningly good looking species from around the world, I have to say this pair I just got is one of my all-time favorite fish. Beautiful, active, productive, great parents..and oh, did I say beautiful. lol. I'm already going to be over run with juvies, but that's OK, just means I'll have these for a long time, hopefully.
