Female Festae! They do not usually get larger than 12 inches. Don't get a male...not as pretty and can get 14-16 inches. Here is my 4 year old 11 inch female before I sold her.

A female Festae is beautiful and also a great fish. Imo a GT is still the best choice for a 55 for life. A big male GT in a 55g is full of personality and extremely interactive with it's owner. And it's also a beautiful fish with great color and long trailing fins. It'll keep you entertained no doubt.

True GT is also a great choice

Ima gonna go with the 3 ciclids and a pictus catfish, what kind of plants would be good if i grew them to about 20" before adding the fish or just add it whenever, ill place rocks around the base to keep it planted too

Well i went to the LFS today to get some supplies to set up the extra 10 I had lying around and I saw some Green Terrors there beside the Jack Dempsey's and I kind of like them better moslty because of theie colour, I did some research and found out that they are very close in size ot the JD's and was wondering what would be the better fish to go with? I am going to pick op the convict and pictus tomorrow and then the FM maby the smae day or the day after and I will decide what fish to go with (JD vs. GT) if the terror will work, everyones opinon on what they would choose may help me out alot

Thanks

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but don't the generic black plecos that most LFS/Chains sell, get to monstrous sizes?

GT or JD are both good candidates. A single male convict or two females can provide for some buddies.
They Do!

a 55g rectangle can supports 22" of fish...

A pair of JD or GT would be fine.

just make sure it's got min decor and decent filter [fx5]

Trust me, as a wet pet the GT is the better choice. They're more intelligent and owner responsive, especially when mature. It's a much better showpiece too with better looks, colors and finnage. You could add a few dithers or possibly some covicts (no pairs) and maybe a bristlenose pleco or small cat. Get plenty of filtration and maintain water params. Dec it out with some driftwood and stones. Sounds like an awesome tank.
